Go to an emergency veterinary clinic now if your cat is struggling to breathe, breathing with its mouth open, collapsing, or repeatedly straining to urinate while producing little or no urine. For new or ongoing anxiety-like behavior without those emergency signs, contact your veterinarian promptly: pain or illness can look like anxiety, and a stressful trip is not a reason to put off needed care.
Decide how quickly your cat needs care
Seek emergency veterinary care now
Call the nearest emergency clinic and follow its instructions if your cat has difficulty breathing, is panting or breathing with its mouth open, or collapses. These are not signs to monitor at home. VCA lists breathing problems and collapse among feline emergencies.
Repeated attempts to urinate that produce only drops or no urine are also an emergency, particularly if your cat is straining, crying, or becoming distressed. A urinary blockage can worsen quickly. Cornell Feline Health Center states, “A urethral obstruction is an absolute emergency, requiring immediate veterinary treatment.” Do not assume the cat is constipated or merely stressed; Cornell’s guidance on feline lower urinary tract disease and Cats Protection’s urinary-problem guidance explain why straining with little or no urine needs urgent attention.
Call your veterinarian promptly about new or persistent changes
Arrange veterinary advice when anxiety-like behavior is new, persists, or comes with physical or routine changes. Watch for hiding, unusual aggression or withdrawal, changes in grooming, appetite, thirst, weight, urination, or toileting. Pain and illness can change behavior, so do not label a new pattern as anxiety without checking for a medical cause.

Contact the clinic about painful or frequent urination, blood in urine, appetite loss, weight loss, or excessive grooming. VCA notes that excessive grooming can be associated with skin disease, parasites, pain, or stress. Its illness guidance says, “Any change in appetite or thirst may be of concern,” and recommends immediate attention if a cat has not eaten properly for 24 hours. Treat that as VCA’s stated threshold, not a reason to wait when other signs are worrying or getting worse. See VCA’s signs-of-illness guidance and Cats Protection’s advice on cat stress.
Why “anxious” does not rule out illness
Cats often show discomfort through small changes rather than obvious cries of pain. Hiding more, grooming excessively, avoiding contact, eating less, or changing where or how they urinate may reflect stress, a medical problem, or both. A veterinarian can assess possible health causes before you and the clinic decide how to address stress. If a symptom seems urgent, describe it to the clinic rather than waiting to see if a calming measure helps.

Make a necessary vet visit less stressful
Tell the clinic when you call that your cat becomes distressed during transport or handling, and describe the symptoms that prompted the call. Ask how to bring your cat in safely and whether the veterinarian recommends medication or another pre-visit plan for this individual cat. Do not give medication unless the veterinarian directs you to.
Prepare the carrier and trip
- Leave the carrier accessible well before the appointment so it is not introduced only when it is time to leave. Gradual acclimation, treats, toys, and familiar bedding can help build a more positive association.
- Choose a secure carrier. FelineVMA describes a hard plastic carrier with a removable top as safe and easy to clean; the cat may be examined in the bottom half. For a soft carrier, its guidance recommends a large top opening and one or preferably two end-door openings.
- Ask the clinic whether synthetic feline facial pheromone spray is suitable for the carrier or car. It is an optional preparation measure, not treatment for an underlying illness and not a substitute for care.
These recommendations are in the FelineVMA veterinary-visit handout and Cat Friendly Homes’ guidance on your role in veterinary visits. Cat Friendly Homes also notes that carrier acclimation can reduce stress during a veterinary visit.

Once medical concerns have been assessed, work with your veterinarian on practical changes to your cat’s environment or routine. If the behavior remains difficult to manage, ask whether referral to a qualified behaviorist is appropriate. Do not use travel aids or behavior changes as a reason to delay an examination for new or worsening symptoms.

How common is fear of vet visits?
Cat Friendly Homes reported that 58% of caregivers say their cat hates going to the veterinarian on its National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day page (2026). The page does not provide study methods alongside the figure, so it should be understood as a caregiver-reported statistic—not an estimate of how many cats have a clinical anxiety disorder.
