Hire a professional dog trainer when you want help teaching everyday skills, need coaching to make progress, or notice a behavior concern that is persisting or getting harder to manage. For sudden behavior changes, possible health causes, or serious safety risks, contact your veterinarian as well; complex cases may need a veterinary behaviorist or experienced behavior consultant. Choose someone who uses reward-based methods, teaches you how to work with your dog, and is clear about their experience and limits.
When should you hire a dog trainer?
You do not need to wait until a problem becomes a crisis. A trainer can help with everyday skills such as leash walking and household manners, and can tailor practice to your dog and household. Professional coaching can also help when you are unsure how to practice consistently or your dog is not making progress.

Seek help when barking, fear, anxiety, destructive behavior, aggression, biting, or fighting persists, escalates, affects quality of life, or may put people or animals at risk. The more serious the concern, the more important it is to choose someone with relevant experience and a plan that includes safety and management—not just obedience exercises.

| Professional | Best suited to | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Dog trainer | Everyday skills and manageable behavior goals | Coaches the dog and owner through training; should refer when needs exceed their experience. (AVSAB: How to Choose a Trainer) |
| Veterinarian (DVM/VMD) | New, sudden, marked, severe, or potentially health-related behavior changes | Can assess medical causes, diagnose and treat medical and behavioral problems, and prescribe medication. (AVSAB: AVSAB Directory) |
| Board-certified veterinary behaviorist (DACVB) | Complex behavior concerns with medical or safety dimensions | A veterinarian with specialty training in behavior; can assess both medical and behavioral factors. (AVSAB: AVSAB Directory) |
| Behavior consultant | Complex behavior cases, especially those affecting safety or quality of life | Look for relevant case experience and willingness to coordinate with your veterinarian. IAABC describes its CDBC credential for consultants with at least three years of experience in complex cases. (IAABC credentials) |
Because physical problems can contribute to behavior changes, ask your veterinarian to assess a concern that is new or markedly different. For an ongoing behavior issue, a veterinarian and qualified trainer or behavior consultant can coordinate care; serious cases may call for environmental management, behavior modification, and sometimes veterinary treatment or medication.
What to look for in a dog trainer
Reward-based methods and humane handling
Ask directly what methods and tools the trainer uses. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems. Its 2025 clarification says it does not support aversive methods—including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections, or physical or psychological punishment—under any circumstances. Be cautious of anyone who relies on fear, pain, force, or “alpha” and “dominance” explanations. (AVSAB position statements)

AVSAB notes that survey studies have found associations between aversive methods and behavior concerns, but surveys cannot establish causation. The practical point for choosing a trainer is to ask what they will do with your dog, why, and what alternatives are available if an exercise makes you or your dog uncomfortable.
Clear teaching for both you and your dog
A good session should include an explanation of the behavior being taught and why it matters, a demonstration, and time for you to practice with coaching. The trainer should adapt instruction to your dog rather than applying a fixed routine. For a group class, ask about class size and how students get individual help. (AVSAB: How to Choose a Trainer)

Experience and credentials that match the problem
Credentials can be useful evidence, but a title alone does not show whether someone is suited to your case. Ask what kinds of dogs and behavior issues they have worked with, and look for experience that fits the complexity and safety implications of your concern.

IAABC distinguishes training manners, life skills, sports, enrichment, and prevention from complex behavior consulting. Its current credential overview describes the Accredited Dog Trainer (ADT) for trainers with at least two years of experience in the former areas, and the Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) for consultants with at least three years of experience with complex cases. IAABC says it evaluates prior knowledge, judgment, and experience rather than providing the training that leads to a credential. Requirements can change, so confirm current criteria with the organization. (IAABC credentials)

Openness to collaboration and referral
A responsible trainer should be comfortable communicating with your veterinarian and referring you to a more experienced professional when a case is outside their scope. For complex or safety-related behavior, ask how the trainer handles management and risk while the behavior plan is underway.
Realistic goals, not guarantees
Ask what progress might look like, how it will be assessed, what you will need to practice, and what the service includes. AVSAB’s trainer-selection statement puts it plainly: “Because of the variable and often unpredictable nature of behavior, a conscientious trainer cannot and will not guarantee the results of training.” Be wary of a promised cure or fixed timeline. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Group class or private coaching?
Choose the format based on your dog’s comfort, the kind of support you need, and whether the behavior can be addressed safely around other dogs. A class can suit everyday skills when your dog can participate comfortably and the instructor provides individual help. Private coaching may be a better fit when your dog is distressed in a group, needs more tailored instruction, or the concern cannot safely be managed around other dogs.
Recommended Free Tools
For aggression, biting, or fighting, ask the professional how they will prevent unsafe interactions; do not treat a group class as the default setting for a safety-related problem. A veterinarian or qualified behavior professional can help determine the appropriate level of support.
