Arrange a veterinary assessment for a new or changing lump, or for persistent stiffness, limping, reduced jumping, or other changes in how your cat moves. Seek emergency care now if your cat cannot bear weight, has difficulty walking, suddenly loses use of a limb, is in severe pain, collapses, struggles to breathe, or has suffered major trauma. A lump’s appearance and a cat’s behavior at home cannot establish the cause.
How urgently does your cat need care?
Use your cat’s mobility and overall condition to decide how quickly to call. These categories are general guidance, not a diagnosis; local clinics may organize services differently. Call a veterinary provider for instructions specific to your cat.

What to do about a new or changing lump
Do not try to judge a growth by its size, shape, or feel. Bumps can be benign or more aggressive cancers, and appearance alone cannot identify which. Cornell includes skin masses among reasons for urgent assessment and advises contacting a veterinarian about concerning swelling, including swelling that appears rapidly or enlarges.

When you call, tell the clinic when you first noticed the lump, where it is, whether it has changed, and whether your cat has other symptoms. Do not delay the call to measure it or repeatedly handle the area. Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or applying home treatments to an unexplained growth; the cited veterinary guidance does not recommend those actions.

Subtle signs of joint pain and mobility problems
Cats do not always show joint pain with an obvious limp. Stiffness, less activity, a changed gait, avoiding jumps or stairs, difficulty getting into the litter box, reduced grooming, hiding, or seeking quiet places can all be useful changes to report. A slowdown should not be dismissed as age alone; these signs can be subtle and occur in cats of any age.

What a veterinary visit may involve
For a suspected joint problem, a veterinarian may take a medical history, perform a general and orthopedic examination, and use X-rays. This assessment helps determine whether osteoarthritis is present or whether another cause may explain the signs. Treatment depends on the diagnosis.
Do not give human pain medicines or start supplements or other pain treatment without veterinary direction. Home observation can help you describe a change, but it cannot confirm the cause or establish a safe treatment.
