The places below are practical hazards, not a ranking by likelihood. The risk depends on how a cat gets in, whether it can get out, and what it may encounter while trapped. - Closets. A cat may slip inside while the door is open and be shut in. Check before closing, especially before leaving home.
- Ovens. A cat may climb into an oven left open to air. Check inside before closing the door or turning it on; a heated oven presents a severe hazard.
- Washing machines and dryers. Cats may seek shelter or warm laundry inside a drum. Check it before every cycle and keep appliance doors firmly shut when not in use. Cats Protection gives the same instruction for washing machines and tumble dryers in its 2025 safety guide: Keeping Your Cat Safe.
- Refrigerators and freezers. A cat can enter while a door is open and be shut inside, where cold exposure is an immediate concern. Look inside before closing the door.
- Suitcases and bags. A cat hiding among packed items can be zipped in, compressed, or carried away. Inspect the contents before closing or moving luggage.
- Dresser drawers. Cats can climb into open drawers and be trapped when they are pushed shut. Check before closing and use a consistent approach to keeping drawers inaccessible when needed.
- Cabinets. A cat may enter an open cabinet or learn to open one. Check inside before shutting it; consider restricting access if your cat returns to a hazardous cabinet.
- Balconies. A cat left outside may face weather or temperature extremes, wildlife, or a dangerous attempt to jump down. Check the balcony before leaving or closing access. This check is not a substitute for separate fall-prevention measures.
- Rafters. A cat may climb up but be unable to descend safely, risking a fall or injury. Restrict unsupervised access and get appropriate help rather than forcing a risky descent.
- Garages. A cat can slip through a door and encounter temperature extremes, chemicals, or other hazards. Check where your cat is when entering or leaving.
- Box springs. Cats may enter the underside and become tangled in support bars or wires. Block access, or keep the bedroom inaccessible if your cat repeatedly goes underneath.
Why some hiding places are more urgent
A cat shut in a closet, drawer, cabinet, or bag may remain undiscovered; the concern rises when the space creates an immediate hazard. An oven can become dangerously hot, a refrigerator or freezer can expose a cat to cold, and a washer or dryer can injure a cat if a cycle starts. A balcony, garage, or high rafter adds risks from the environment or a fall. These are different kinds of danger, so there is no useful universal ranking without evidence about an individual home and cat.

Make a quick check part of household routines
- Before closing closets, drawers, cabinets, bags, ovens, refrigerators, or freezers, look inside.
- Before every laundry cycle, inspect the washer or dryer drum. Keep appliance doors firmly shut when idle.
- Check your cat’s location when you enter or leave the garage, balcony, or an area with rafters.
- Block access behind appliances and to unfinished openings only after confirming the cat is not already inside.
- If your cat repeatedly enters a particular gap or structure, restrict access rather than relying on a last-second check.
Cats Protection also advises keeping cats away from hot surfaces and liquids and blocking spaces where they could become trapped. What to do if your cat is trapped
First identify the immediate danger: heat, cold, a fall, entanglement, or difficulty breathing. Avoid pulling, forcing a climb, or dismantling a structure in a way that could worsen an injury or close the cat in further. If you cannot free the cat safely, seek appropriate help.

Offer safe places to hide and rest

When a change in hiding merits a vet call
If your cat starts hiding more often, or the change comes with altered eating, drinking, urination, or defecation, monitor those changes and contact a veterinarian. Hiding alone does not establish a diagnosis, but a noticeable change alongside other behavior or health changes is worth discussing.
