For ice fishing on Houghton Lake, start with one of the Michigan DNR’s five large public access sites: East Shore, Denton Township Park, South Shore, West Shore, or North Shore. These are ways onto the lake—not verified fishing hot spots. Choose an access point for your route and current availability, then check local ice conditions before setting out.
Which public access should you use?
The Michigan DNR lists five large boat access sites around Houghton Lake. The list helps you plan where to reach the water, but it does not rank the sites by fishing success. Confirm the access is open and suitable for your trip; an open launch does not establish that nearby ice is safe.

Houghton Lake covers 20,075 acres, according to the Michigan DNR, and is relatively shallow with aquatic vegetation throughout. A historical DNR fisheries report gives an average depth of 8.4 feet and a maximum depth of 22 feet, and notes sand and gravel shoals throughout the lake. These figures offer broad context for reading a depth map; they are not a current, spot-by-spot survey or proof that a particular weed edge or shoal is producing fish.

No current source here identifies a dependable hot spot, local catch rate, or preferred depth for a particular species. Use a depth map to understand the lake’s structure, then adjust based on where you actually mark or find fish rather than assuming an access-adjacent area is productive. The historical depth figures are in the DNR’s Houghton Lake fisheries report.
How to search the water column
The DNR’s statewide ice-fishing guidance recommends beginning near the bottom, checking progressively higher in the water column, and fishing at the level where fish are found. It describes using a bobber or fishing a tight line with a jig. This is general technique advice, not a Houghton Lake-specific tested pattern.

- Start your presentation near the bottom.
- Work upward in increments, checking different levels for fish.
- Once you locate fish, keep your bait at that level and adjust if activity or marks change.

Which fish can you target?
The DNR’s ice-fishing information names walleye, bluegill, crappie, and sunfish among Houghton Lake’s winter fishing targets. Its broader lake profile also lists yellow perch, bass, and northern pike. These are fishery opportunities, not a guarantee that a species will be active or available on a particular day. Check regulations before fishing
Michigan’s 2026 Fishing Regulations are in effect through March 31, 2027. Before fishing, check the current rules for seasons, size and possession limits, and gear restrictions for your target species. Regulations can change, so verify them again when planning a later trip on the Michigan DNR fishing regulations page.
