Most cats are more receptive to gentle touch around the cheeks, chin, head and neck than on the belly or near the tail base. Start where your cat can see your hand, let the cat choose whether to approach, and stop if its body language changes. These five spots are places to try—not a universal ranking or a promise that every cat will enjoy being petted there.
Five spots to try, if your cat welcomes touch
Begin with a brief, light stroke and let your cat’s response guide what happens next. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM veterinary interaction guidelines describe the head and neck, especially areas around facial glands, as preferred touch regions. PetMD also recommends beginning gently at the cheeks or chin when a cat is receptive. The upper back is a more cautious option: try it only if the cat remains relaxed.

Cheeks
Offer a fingertip near the cheek rather than reaching over the cat’s head. If the cat leans in or rubs against your hand, try a gentle stroke along the cheek.

Chin
Use a light touch beneath the chin if the cat accepts your hand. Keep the first contact brief; don’t lift or restrain the cat to reach this area.

Top of the head
Move slowly and stroke gently over the top of the head. Stay where the cat can see your hand, and pause if it turns away or stiffens.

Around the base of the ears
The area around the ears is part of the head-and-neck region to try gently. Avoid poking into the ears or continuing if the cat shifts away.

Upper back
If the cat is relaxed and receptive, try a short stroke along the upper back in the direction the fur lies. This is a cautious option, not a guaranteed favorite.

The veterinary guidelines support head and neck touch; they do not establish a scientifically ranked “best five.” Each cat may prefer different places, and its comfort can vary with the situation.

How to offer a pet and read the response
- Give the cat a choice. Lower yourself to the cat’s level, avoid fixed eye contact, and wait to see whether it approaches. Don’t loom over it or reach suddenly.
- Offer a short, gentle stroke. Start around the cheek or chin and move in the direction of the fur. The guidelines identify fur-direction touch as more comfortable for cats.
- Pause and check. Continue only if the cat stays relaxed or moves into your hand. If it pulls away, turns away, or shows tension, stop and give it space rather than holding it in place.
Possible signs the cat needs a break include ears rotating or flattening, head shaking, nose licking, rippling skin or fur, and rapid tail swishing. Turning or moving away is also a reason to stop. Look at the whole cat and the immediate context rather than relying on a single cue.
Why a belly-up cat may not want a belly rub
A cat exposing its belly is not necessarily inviting you to touch it. The belly is one area where the AAFP/ISFM guidelines report negative behavioral responses to touch. The area just before the tail base can also prompt negative responses, so neither is a good default choice. An individual cat may tolerate or enjoy touch there, but don’t assume it does; let that cat’s response—not its posture alone—guide you.

When a change in touch tolerance may need a vet
Stop touching any area that seems painful. If a cat that previously accepted petting develops a new aversion or reacts defensively to touch, contact a veterinarian instead of treating the change as simple fussiness or punishing the cat. Pain can contribute to defensive behavior. Cornell’s feline behavior guidance advises avoiding contact with painful areas and working with a veterinarian on pain management.
