Wolf spiders live mainly outdoors, where they run along the ground to hunt insects in places such as gardens, fields, forests, and under stones or leaf litter. One indoors is usually an occasional visitor, not a sign that your home is infested. Wolf spiders are generally shy and not considered dangerous to people, though they can bite if handled or trapped against skin.

Where do wolf spiders live?

Wolf spiders belong to the family Lycosidae, which includes many species with different habits. Depending on the species, they may be found in forests, fields, grasslands, meadows, gardens, lawns, landscaped areas, and along shorelines or beaches. They tend to hunt on the ground, among leaf litter, or beneath stones and logs. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension and University of Minnesota Extension describe these varied ground habitats.

Some species dig burrows in soil; others use protected crevices under rocks or similar cover as retreats. Silk may line these retreats and burrows, but wolf spiders do not build webs to catch prey. They typically run after insects such as crickets, cutworms, and ground beetles. Many are most active after dark, although activity varies by species and conditions.

Why is there a wolf spider in my house?

A wolf spider indoors is an occasional visitor, not proof that it is an indoor house spider. Extension services report sightings near doors, windows, basements, and garages, and spiders may get in through gaps under doors. In Oregon State Extension’s regional guidance, indoor sightings are noted especially in autumn; Colorado State Extension also describes appearances where nearby habitat has been disturbed. These observations do not establish one season or pattern for every region.

Oregon State Extension lists doors, windows, house plants, basements, and garages as places where a wolf spider may be seen. A spider near an entrance may simply have wandered inside while hunting or moving through its habitat.

Do wolf spiders make webs?

No—not to catch prey. Wolf spiders hunt by running after insects rather than waiting in a prey-catching web. They do use silk to line burrows or sheltered retreats, so finding silk in a protected spot does not mean the spider has built a web for hunting.

Will wolf spiders hurt you?

Wolf spiders are generally shy and are not considered dangerous to people. As University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension puts it, “While the spiders may be agitated, they are not aggressive nor considered to be harmful to humans.” A bite is possible if a spider is mishandled or trapped against skin, so avoid picking one up.

Penn State Extension reports that a bite may cause pain and redness, sometimes with localized swelling; symptoms generally subside within 24 hours. That is a general description, not a guarantee about every bite or a way to identify an unknown bite from a photo. If you suspect a spider bite, the National Pesticide Information Center advises contacting Poison Control. In the United States, Poison Control can be reached at 1-800-222-1222. For help identifying a spider, contact a local County Extension Office.

What should I do if I find one indoors?

Oregon State University Extension Service recommends physically removing an indoor wolf spider and relocating it outside. You can place a container over the spider, slide a stiff card underneath, then carry it outdoors and release it. A purpose-made catch-and-release tool is another option if you prefer not to get as close. Avoid handling the spider directly, particularly when you are unsure of its identification.

How can I recognize one?

Wolf spiders are often brown or gray, hairy, and quick on the ground. Nebraska Extension notes that eight eyes arranged in three rows can help identify the family, but appearance alone may not confirm a species. If identification matters, ask a local County Extension Office rather than relying on a photo alone.

Females carry their egg sacs and, after the spiderlings hatch, the young climb onto the mother’s back. Nebraska Extension says she protects them for a couple of weeks before they venture out. A female carrying spiderlings may look startling, but this is maternal care, not evidence of a nest attacking people.
