There is no evidence-backed ranking proving that six retail calming treats work best for cats. The useful way to choose is to compare the exact product’s ingredients and disclosed amounts, cat-specific directions, quality signals, format, and fit for your cat’s stressor—and to treat any expected benefit as uncertain. Calming aids are best considered part of a broader behavior plan, not a substitute for veterinary care or changes to the cat’s environment.
Do calming cat treats work?
Sometimes a calming product may help, but evidence is tied to particular ingredients or formulations, not to every product labeled “calming.” Studies of some ingredients are small or have limited findings, and amounts can vary between products. A cat’s response also cannot be guaranteed.

One 2017 study assessed a diet containing both alpha-casozepine and L-tryptophan in 24 fearful cats. The researchers reported between-group differences on two behavioral measures in an open-field test. Because the study tested a combined diet under specific conditions, it cannot show which ingredient contributed to the findings or establish that a chew or treat will have the same effect. A 2018 open-label field study of L-theanine tablets reported that owners of 27 of 33 cats were satisfied and that no side effects were reported. An open-label study without a comparison group cannot establish that the tablets caused improvement or predict how an individual cat will respond. Read the study.

For mild stress, a cat-formulated calming aid may be one option to discuss with a veterinarian. Severe, persistent, or worsening anxiety calls for veterinary assessment and may need a behavior plan or prescription treatment.
Six cat calming products to consider
These are options, not a ranked “best” list: the available evidence does not provide a head-to-head efficacy comparison of six retail treats. Some are chewable tablets or supplements rather than ordinary treats, so check the current label and product format before buying. Product formulations and availability can change.
1. Anxitane chewable tablets
Anxitane is a chewable L-theanine tablet that its manufacturer, Virbac, describes for dogs and cats with mild to moderate environmentally induced anxiety. The product page lists 50 mg and 100 mg strengths; these are product strengths, not a universal feline dose recommendation. Virbac cites a pilot open-label clinical trial in cats, and its claims about efficacy or acceptance should be understood as manufacturer statements, not a guarantee for every cat. Ask your veterinarian which strength, if any, is appropriate. See Virbac’s product information.

2. Zylkene
VCA lists Zylkene among nutraceutical options used for behavior support. It is not evidence that every product in the category works, nor does the source establish a retail treat’s dose, palatability, or effectiveness for a particular stressor. Confirm the current cat-specific directions and ingredients with your veterinarian before choosing it.
3. Composure
VCA also names Composure among available nutraceuticals. Its mention in veterinary guidance is not an endorsement or a finding that it outperforms other products. Check the exact feline formulation, active-ingredient amounts, and administration directions on the package; formulations and quality can differ.
4. Solliquin
Solliquin appears among the nutraceuticals VCA identifies for behavior support. The cited guidance does not establish a direct clinical comparison with other calming products or a specific retail treat outcome. Ask your veterinarian whether the product and format suit your cat, and use only the cat-specific label directions.

5. Purina Pro Plan Calming Care
VCA includes Purina Pro Plan Calming Care in its list of available nutraceuticals. It is a supplement option rather than necessarily a chewable treat, so verify the form and directions on the current package. The listing alone does not establish how quickly it will work or whether it is appropriate for a particular cat.
6. Cat-formulated calming soft chews
Soft chews are a format, not a single standardized treatment: ingredient combinations and amounts vary by product. PetMD’s veterinary panel advises looking for clearly stated doses and a form the cat will reliably take, rather than relying on a proprietary blend that hides ingredient quantities. Its panel considered formulation, scientific support, quality practices, brand reputation, palatability, and ease of administration. The panel consists of veterinarians and veterinary technicians employed by Chewy, a relevant disclosure when weighing its recommendations. See PetMD’s guide.
What should you look for in calming cat treats?
- A feline-specific label: Choose a product labeled for cats, with clear administration directions. Do not adapt a dog or human product or infer a dose from another product.
- Disclosed active ingredients and amounts: L-theanine and alpha-casozepine are used in feline calming products, but their presence does not guarantee benefit. Avoid relying on proprietary blends that do not reveal ingredient amounts.
- Relevant evidence: Ask whether evidence concerns the exact product and formulation, or only an ingredient or a different kind of product. A study of a supplemented diet does not prove that a treat containing one of its ingredients will have the same effect.
- Quality signals: A quality program such as the NASC Quality Seal can be one signal to consider, but it does not prove clinical effectiveness. VCA cautions that nutraceutical products are not subject to the same licensing requirements as medicines and can vary in purity, quality, activity, and efficacy.
- Texture and acceptance: A product only helps if the cat will take it reliably. Consider whether a chew can be given directly or mixed with food without turning administration into another stressor.
- A clear use case: Match the product and format to the situation, such as a specific environmental stressor, in consultation with your veterinarian. Do not assume a treat will resolve fear that needs medical or behavioral care.
“The label ‘natural’ does not guarantee that a product is safe to use in dogs and cats,” VCA cautions. Human supplements may contain ingredients or inactive components unsuitable for pets, and interactions with medication are possible. Read VCA’s guidance on complementary medication.

How long do calming cat treats take to work?
There is no single timing that can be applied to all calming products. The evidence summarized here does not establish a universal onset time for retail treats. In the 2017 study, cats were assessed at baseline and after two and four weeks while eating a supplemented diet; those study checkpoints should not be interpreted as a promise that a treat will work within that period.
Follow the specific cat-product label and your veterinarian’s advice. If a product does not appear to help, do not increase the amount or combine it with other supplements without asking the veterinarian.
What if your cat will not eat a chew?
Chews are not the only format. PetMD discusses purees, powders, and capsules, as well as non-treat options such as pheromone diffusers and therapeutic diets. These alternatives are not interchangeable: suitability depends on the cat’s preferences, the stressor, and the product’s evidence and directions. Ask your veterinarian to help select a form that your cat will accept. PetMD’s guide to calming products and other aids describes these formats.

Are calming treats safe for cats?
Safety depends on the individual cat, the product, and how it is used. Consult your veterinarian before starting a calming aid, particularly if your cat has a medical condition or takes medication. Do not use human supplements for a cat unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
- Arrange a veterinary check if anxiety is severe, chronic, or getting worse; a supplement may not be enough.
- Seek veterinary advice for a sudden behavior change, which can be a sign of an underlying medical problem.
- Use only the labeled feline product directions confirmed as appropriate for your cat; do not combine calming products or adjust amounts on your own.
- Support the aid with environmental management and behavior modification. Calming products are not a replacement for addressing the source of stress.
Evidence for some approaches remains limited, and a 2025 review also warns that products from unlicensed manufacturers may differ in purity, quality, activity, and effectiveness. Read the review.
