Burmese and Birman cats are essentially tied for the longest estimated life expectancy in a recent UK study. Researchers estimated 14.42 years for Burmese cats and 14.39 years for Birmans. The estimates are so close—and their uncertainty ranges overlap so substantially—that the study does not establish a meaningful longevity advantage for either breed.
Which cat breed lives the longest?
In a 2024 UK analysis of veterinary records, Burmese cats had an estimated life expectancy at birth of 14.42 years, and Birman cats had an estimate of 14.39 years. The study’s 95% confidence intervals were 12.91–15.93 years for Burmese and 12.87–15.91 years for Birman, so the estimates overlap widely. These figures describe populations, not how long a particular cat will live. The 2024 VetCompass study estimated 11.74 years for UK companion cats overall (95% confidence interval 11.61–11.87 years).

Why do studies name different top breeds?
A previous England study ranked Birman first, but it measured a different outcome in a different cohort. Its reported median age at death for Birman cats was 16.1 years, based on just 12 deaths. It reported medians of 14.3 years for Burmese, 14.2 for Siamese, and 14.0 for crossbred cats. That 2015 study examined confirmed deaths recorded by 90 primary-care veterinary practices between September 2009 and December 2012.

The newer study built life tables using 7,936 confirmed deaths among cats under primary veterinary care in 2019, with confirmed deaths recorded through March 31, 2021. The studies also differ in dates and geographic scope. Their rankings should be read in that context, not treated as a direct head-to-head breed trial.

What the longevity figures do—and do not—tell you
The 2024 study describes life expectancy as the mean lifespan of animals alive in a population; lifespan is the duration of an individual animal’s life. An estimate of 14 years therefore does not predict that every cat of that breed will reach 14, or that another breed cannot live longer.
The study also found associations between lifespan and factors including sex, neuter status, breed status, and adult body weight. Female cats had an estimated life expectancy of 12.51 years, compared with 11.18 years for males in that UK population—a reported difference of 1.33 years. These are observational findings, not proof that any one factor caused an individual cat’s lifespan. The authors caution that breed-specific evidence is relatively sparse and that regional differences in breed populations, care, outdoor access, and euthanasia decisions can affect comparisons.
Does purebred status mean a shorter life?
Not as a universal rule. In the 2015 England study, crossbred cats had a median longevity of 14.0 years, compared with 12.5 years for purebred cats. The newer UK study likewise reported lower age-zero life expectancy for purebred cats than for crossbred cats, but findings from other national research have differed. The studies use particular populations and designs; neither establishes a simple outcome for every purebred or crossbred cat.
How to weigh longevity when choosing a cat
Breed averages can inform a decision, but they are only one consideration. Health and welfare matter too. A 2024 UK government review discusses inherited conditions and welfare concerns associated with some feline breeding practices and traits. Read the government review of feline breeding practices alongside longevity information, and ask a veterinarian about the health risks relevant to a particular cat.
