Maine Coons, Norwegian Forest Cats, and Turkish Angoras all have authoritative breed descriptions calling for long or full tails. Their tails are not identical: a Maine Coon’s is described as a long plume, the Norwegian Forest Cat’s as bushy with visible guard hairs, and the Turkish Angora’s as a tapering tail with a full brush.
Although the original title promises ten breeds, the available breed-standard evidence verifies these three. A long-haired coat by itself is not enough to establish that a breed has a long, fluffy, or bushy tail.
Three breeds with documented long or full tails

Maine Coon: a flowing plume
CFA’s profile describes the adult coat as “thick, luxuriant” and says it culminates in a “dramatically long plumed tail.” TICA likewise calls the tail long and flowing. These are breed descriptions, not a promise that every individual cat will have the same tail fullness or coat length.
Norwegian Forest Cat: a bushy tail with guard hairs
The GCCF standard, as presented by the Norwegian Forest Cat Club, specifies: “Long, bushy, well furnished with visible guard hairs, should reach at least to the shoulder blades and be in balance with the body.” The visible guard hairs and the stated length distinguish this description from a general impression of fluffiness.

Turkish Angora: a tapering tail with a full brush
CFA’s standard reads: “TAIL: long and tapering from a wide base to a narrow end, with a full brush.” Its silky tail and ruff can look full even though the body coat does not have to be uniformly long.
What “plumed,” “bushy,” and “full brush” mean
- Plumed or flowing: A long, feathered-looking tail, as described for the Maine Coon. The term emphasizes the overall silhouette.
- Bushy: A well-furnished tail. In the Norwegian Forest Cat standard, visible guard hairs are specifically part of the description.
- Full brush: A tail that tapers from a wider base to a narrower tip but carries abundant, silky-looking fur, as in the Turkish Angora standard.
These terms describe tail shape and fur, not simply the length of a cat’s body coat. Breed standards describe ideal traits; an individual cat’s appearance can vary. The Norwegian Forest Cat standard also allows a shorter summer coat.

Grooming depends on the coat, not just the tail
Long or full tail fur can need attention, but the sources do not support one grooming schedule for every long-haired breed. CFA says Maine Coon breeders recommend combing two or three times a week, in sessions of five to ten minutes, to help control shedding, prevent hairballs, and protect against matting. This is CFA’s breed-care guidance, not a tested prescription for every cat.
By contrast, the Norwegian Forest Cat Club says occasional combing is sufficient for the breed’s largely self-maintaining natural coat. A wide-tooth cat grooming comb is one brand-neutral option for combing; no cited source endorses a specific tool or claims that any comb eliminates shedding, hairballs, or mats.

Why this list has three breeds, not ten
Breed-standard indexes identify other long-haired breeds that may be worth checking, but an index listing does not establish a particular tail shape. The Canadian Cat Association standards index and the Australian Cat Federation standards index include candidates such as Persians, Ragdolls, Siberians, Birmans, and Turkish Vans. Without individual tail wording for each, including them as verified examples would overstate what the standards establish.
