The right cat carrier depends on how you travel. For routine vet visits, prioritize a stable, easy-to-clean carrier with a top opening or removable top; for flights, confirm the specific airline’s current rules and measurements before you buy. A product described as “airline approved” is not guaranteed to meet every airline’s requirements.
How to choose a cat carrier for your cat and trip
Start with your cat’s size and weight, then consider how the carrier opens, how securely it closes, and how it will be carried. A carrier that fits a kitten may not remain suitable as the cat grows.

- Fit: Check the cat’s actual body measurements and weight against the carrier’s usable interior and stated capacity. Your cat should be able to stand, lie down and turn around. Catster also advises choosing a carrier that lets the cat change position or turn (Catster’s Australia carrier guide).
- Access: Top entry or a removable top can make loading and veterinary examination easier. Cat Protection Society of NSW recommends front and top openings for vet visits and short car trips (carrier training guidance).
- Safety and support: Look for secure closures, adequate ventilation, a stable structure and handles or clips appropriate for your cat’s weight. Lightweight plastic fittings and soft mesh can be concerns for a larger cat.
- Cleaning: A cleanable carrier and soft, absorbent bedding make routine transport more practical. A sturdy plastic model with a removable top is one option recommended for veterinary visits.
- Travel mode: Hard-shell carriers favor stability; soft-sided designs may suit some travel situations; backpacks and collapsible formats trade structure for portability or storage. Choose for the journey rather than relying on a broad product label.

These are recommendations published by the named guides, not independently established winners. Catster’s Australia-focused guide, updated September 15, 2026, names three picks and also lists three other formats. Modern Pet’s September 1, 2026 article lists carriers it says are stocked in Australia. Product names, stock, specifications and prices can change, so check the current Australian listing.

Which carrier format suits a vet visit?
Hard-shell carrier with top access
For regular veterinary transport, a sturdy plastic carrier that does not collapse is a practical starting point. Vet HQ recommends ventilation, a cover, a removable top and enough room for a cat to stand, lie down and turn around (Vet HQ’s transport advice). International Cat Care’s visiting-your-vet guide, hosted by Cat Protection Society of Australia, likewise says, “A sturdy plastic carrier is preferred,” and recommends a removable top and cleaning-friendly construction (visiting your vet guide).
Soft-sided carrier
A soft-sided carrier may be easier to carry in some situations, but inspect the mesh, seams and closures and ensure it supports your cat securely. Cat Protection Society of NSW cautions that soft mesh may be unsuitable for a large cat, and that lightweight plastic handles or clips may fail under a larger cat’s weight.

Backpack, tote or collapsible carrier
Backpacks and totes emphasize portability, while collapsible models can be easier to store. Modern Pet’s guide covers these alongside soft-sided and hard-shell carriers, but format alone does not establish suitability: assess the interior dimensions, ventilation, closure security and support for your cat.
What to check before buying for air travel
Airline requirements are specific to the carrier, route and airline. Before purchasing or travelling, check the airline’s current published dimensions and rules, including any requirements that apply to the carrier’s placement. Then compare those requirements with the carrier’s exact external measurements and your cat’s fit. A listing’s “airline approved” wording is a seller or product claim, not a universal guarantee of acceptance.

- Measure the exact model under consideration and compare every dimension with the airline’s limits.
- Confirm your cat’s weight and usable space fit the product’s current specifications.
- Recheck rules and measurements close to travel, since product specifications and airline policies can change.
Help your cat become familiar with the carrier
Make the carrier part of the home before a trip rather than bringing it out only when travel is imminent. Cat Protection Society of NSW captures the goal as “the carrier comes out, the cat disappears.” Leave it accessible, add familiar bedding and build positive associations gradually. Vet HQ also advises familiarising the cat at home and bringing the carrier out before travel.

- Offer treats or other positive experiences near or inside the carrier, letting the cat approach at its own pace.
