Some succulents are toxic to cats and others are listed as non-toxic, so “succulent” alone is not enough to judge a plant. The ASPCA lists aloe, jade plant and kalanchoe as toxic to cats, while it lists several Echeveria species as non-toxic. Check the plant’s scientific name and contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly if your cat may have eaten a potentially toxic plant.
Why the plant’s exact identity matters
Succulent is a broad category, not a safety classification. Different species can have different effects, and common names may refer to more than one plant. A label that says “jade,” “aloe” or “money tree” is not always enough to identify the plant reliably; use the scientific name on the label, or ask a knowledgeable plant professional to help identify it.

The ASPCA’s general succulent guidance, dated April 7, 2021, names examples of toxic and non-toxic plants. Its individual plant database entries provide classifications and, for some plants, reported signs and toxic principles. The examples below reflect those ASPCA listings; they do not establish a safe amount for a cat to eat.

| Plant in ASPCA listing | Cat classification | Reported toxic principles or signs |
|---|---|---|
| Aloe vera | Toxic | Saponins and anthraquinones; vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea. The ASPCA entry says aloe gel is considered edible; that does not establish that a cat can safely eat the plant. |
| Medicine plant / aloe listing | Toxic | Anthraquinones and anthracene glycosides (aloin); vomiting and red urine. Common names overlap with Aloe vera, so confirm the botanical identity rather than assuming the listings describe the same plant. |
| Jade plant (Crassula argentea in the ASPCA entry) | Toxic | Toxic principle listed as unknown; vomiting, depression and incoordination. |
| Kalanchoe spp. | Toxic | Bufodienolides; vomiting, diarrhea and, rarely, abnormal heart rhythm. |
ASPCA’s general succulent article also names jade (Crassula ovata), pencil cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli), mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) and string of pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) as toxic examples. For pencil cactus, it describes vomiting and drooling, and says sap may irritate the eyes; severe exposure can cause corneal ulcers. The general article and individual database entries do not always use the same taxonomic label, which is another reason to verify the plant rather than relying on a common name.

Succulents ASPCA lists as non-toxic to cats
| Plant in ASPCA listing | Cat classification | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Echeveria (Echeveria glauca) | Non-toxic | ASPCA classifies this named species as non-toxic to cats. |
| Plush Plant (Echeveria pul-oliver) | Non-toxic | ASPCA classifies this named plant as non-toxic to cats. |
ASPCA’s general article also includes Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides), hens and chicks (Sempervivum sp.), variegated wax plant (Echeveria sp.) and bunny ear cactus (Opuntia microdasys) among its non-toxic examples. These classifications apply to the plants named in the listing, not every plant sold under a similar common name.
Non-toxic does not mean that eating a plant is harmless in every case. ASPCA cautions that some pets may have mild stomach upset after eating any plant. If you want a succulent in a home with a cat, choose one that is correctly identified and prevent chewing where possible; do not treat a non-toxic listing as permission for a cat to eat it.

What to do if your cat may have eaten a succulent
- Contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control promptly. ASPCA lists (888) 426-4435 on its plant entries; a consultation fee may apply.
- Identify the plant if you can. Have its scientific name or a clear photo available. Tell the professional what part may have been eaten and when.
- Follow professional advice. The ASPCA entries do not give a universal safe dose, exposure-specific prognosis or home-treatment protocol. Do not infer that an exposure is safe from the plant’s common name or attempt to choose treatment based on a general plant listing.
The classifications and signs here come from ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center plant guidance retrieved October 7, 2026. Individual database entries did not display publication dates in the retrieved material. A listing cannot determine the risk or treatment for an individual cat’s exposure; that assessment belongs with a veterinarian or poison-control professional.
