The animal was reportedly swimming with normally colored orcas, but its pigmentation has not been scientifically identified as albinism or leucism.
What was spotted off Japan?
Indian Defence Review reported on October 3, 2025, that Hayakawa photographed a white orca off Hokkaido. The article says another tourist vessel alerted his boat to the animal and describes it breaching alongside five normally colored orcas. These are details reported in that coverage, rather than independently verified field observations. Indian Defence Review’s October 3, 2025 report credits the image to Japan.Jam Press/Splitpics/Noriyuki Hayakawa.
Hayakawa told Jam Press that after more than a decade photographing orcas, it was the first white one he had seen. The quotation was reported by Indian Defence Review; the original interview transcript was not independently reviewed.
Was the orca albino or leucistic?
That has not been confirmed. Related Jam Press-distributed coverage says the white coloration could be caused by albinism or leucism, and that scientists remain unsure which condition affects these whales. The report does not establish a diagnosis for this individual, so “white orca” is the most accurate description. The related April 28, 2025 coverage discusses both possibilities without settling the animal’s condition.

When did the sighting happen?
The October 2025 article and related coverage dated April 28, 2025, do not establish whether they describe separate encounters or whether the later article republishes an earlier sighting. The publication dates are known; the encounter date is not established by these reports.
What does the sighting tell us about the pod?
The reported presence of other orcas shows that the white animal was seen in their company during the encounter. It does not establish the animal’s social rank, a special role in the pod, any health effect of its coloration, or a change in pod behavior. The available reporting also does not support a precise count of white orcas worldwide; phrases such as “only a handful” are not tied to a defined population or study.
