Call a qualified wildlife rehabilitator or raptor center that accepts eagles. If you cannot find one, ask a local veterinarian, humane society, or county or municipal wildlife agency for a referral. Give the responder the eagle’s exact location and what you have observed. Do not approach or try to capture a large eagle; wait for professional instructions or an experienced responder.

Who should you call?

Start with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or raptor center serving the place where you found the eagle. Call first to confirm the facility accepts eagles and ask what to do while help is arranged. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) advises people who find injured wildlife to contact a local veterinarian, humane society, or county or municipal wildlife agency to locate a qualified rehabilitator that can take the animal: USFWS guidance.

If you cannot locate a suitable facility, try those local referral sources or your state wildlife agency. State agencies may have their own reporting route, and there is no single national eagle-rescue number established by the available guidance.

What to tell the responder

  • Give the eagle’s exact location, including directions or a landmark that will help someone find it.
  • Describe what you can see from a safe distance, such as whether the bird appears injured, cannot fly, or is in immediate danger.
  • Explain whether you can remain nearby without approaching or putting yourself at risk.
  • Ask whether the facility can accept the eagle and whether a trained person can come to the location. If you cannot safely transport the bird, say so and wait for an experienced responder or further instructions.

Stay back and do not try to rescue it yourself

Eagles are powerful birds that can seriously injure an inexperienced person. The USFWS eagle handling handbook calls for careful handling and transfer to a veterinarian or rehabilitator experienced with raptors. If the bird is large, distressed, or difficult to reach—or you are unsure what to do—do not attempt to pick it up or capture it. Contact a qualified local responder and follow their directions.

Minimize contact and do not offer food or water. The American Eagle Foundation’s general wildlife guidance says not to feed or water injured wildlife; for an eagle, prioritize instructions from the qualified responder and avoid approaching the bird.

Do not keep or rehabilitate the eagle yourself

Do not take an eagle home or attempt to care for it without the required permits. USFWS says keeping an injured wild bird without proper permits is against the law. Eagle rehabilitation can also require state and federal licensing; Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources outlines those requirements in its eagle rehabilitation guidance. Leave care and handling to qualified, authorized professionals.

Contact routes depend on the state

Use the wildlife agency and rehabilitation services for the state where the eagle was found. For example, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) directs people to local rehabilitation facilities, the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, or FWC Wildlife Alert for injured or dead bald eagles. Its listed number is 1-888-404-FWCC. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) directs reports of injured bald or golden eagles to a local LDWF office or its statewide number, 800-442-2511. These are state-specific options, not nationwide contacts; check the relevant agency page for current instructions before calling.

Use directories as leads, then verify

The American Eagle Foundation’s state-by-state directory can help identify agencies, rehabilitators, raptor centers, and USFWS regional offices. The directory says it was last updated November 9, 2018, and warns that links or information may be outdated. Confirm contact details, service area, current availability, and whether the facility accepts eagles directly with the agency or center.

When choosing whom to call, prioritize a contact that serves the location, can accept eagles or large raptors, is reachable, and can explain how the bird will be assessed or safely transported. If the first contact cannot help, ask for a referral to an appropriate agency or facility.
