Blue marron are a colour variation of the same species as common black and brown marron, according to a 2017 PerthNow report. Why are they blue?
In PerthNow’s report published 5 May 2017, Dr Lawrence said the bright blue colour resulted from the expression of a simple recessive gene. The report describes blue marron as the same species as common black and brown marron—not a separate species. It does not explain the underlying molecular mechanism or provide experimental evidence, so the inheritance account should be understood as the scientist’s explanation as quoted in that article.
How is the blue colour inherited?
Dr Lawrence described a pattern in which two blue marron produce blue offspring, while a blue marron crossed with a black one produces mainly black offspring. Breeding those offspring together can, in his account, produce some blue individuals:
“If you mate two blue marron you will get blue progeny but if you mate a black and a blue you will get mainly black progeny and if you mate those progeny together you will get some blues too.”

How do blue marron fit into aquarium and food markets?
The 2017 PerthNow story said blue marron had been popular additions to home aquariums for at least 30 years and were cultivated for the ornamental market. That account is not confirmation of present-day availability, and it does not give aquarium-care guidance.

The report contrasted that ornamental use with restaurant preferences for dark black or brown marron, which Dr Lawrence said cook bright red. Blue marron, he said, turn orange when cooked. He explained why they were not favoured for commercial food farms this way: “But you wouldn’t really want to have blue marron in a commercial food marron farm,”

What did the report say about marron size?
Dr Lawrence also described a difference between the sizes of farmed marron overseas and those being grown locally at the time of the report. He said overseas farmers were growing animals to about 30 grams, while local animals were being grown to 250–300 grams. He also called marron the world’s third-largest freshwater crayfish. These are claims attributed to Dr Lawrence in PerthNow’s 5 May 2017 article, not current or independently verified figures.
