Why Artificial Spider Webs Can Harm Birds and Other Wildlife

Outdoor fake spider webs can entangle birds and other wildlife, causing hidden injuries or death. Keep web-like decorations indoors and seek professional help for an animal caught in webbing.

Stretchy, fine-fiber artificial spider webs hung outdoors can tangle birds and other wildlife, and an animal that struggles may become more tightly caught. Wildlife-care sources describe injuries including restricted blood flow, toe damage or amputation, and death. The safest choice is to keep synthetic webbing indoors, behind glass; if you find an animal caught in it, get it evaluated by a wildlife carer, veterinarian, or animal-care center.

How fake webs injure wildlife

Loose synthetic fibers can catch an animal as it flies, climbs, or forages. Once entangled, struggling may tighten the fibers. Canadian Wildlife Federation guidance says birds and insects can become trapped and may be unable to free themselves; an animal may remain caught, become prey, or be found too late.

Audubon reports that WildCare has treated birds entangled in decorative webbing, including an Anna’s Hummingbird, a White-crowned Sparrow, and a Western Screech-Owl. Reported possible consequences include restricted blood flow, toxin build-up, toe injuries or amputations, and other serious harm. BirdLife Australia also warns of strangulation and restricted blood flow that can cause severe injury or death.

As Alison Hermance, WildCare’s director of communications, put it in Audubon: “Spider web is designed by nature, and by the spider, to entangle and entrap.” These cases show that the risk is physical entanglement, not simply that decoration resembles a web. They do not establish how often incidents happen or compare the safety of different materials.

Why outdoor placement is the key concern

Outdoor webbing puts loose fibers in the spaces where wildlife may fly, forage, or move. The Canadian Wildlife Federation recommends avoiding outdoor fake webs and suggests placing web-like decorations inside windows or doors instead. A wall-mounted display is not risk-free: Audubon cautions that birds can still become ensnared even when webbing is flush against a wall.

Placement Wildlife exposure Entanglement possibility Practical consideration
Outdoors Loose fibers are in outdoor flight and foraging areas. Wildlife can become caught; the sources do not quantify the risk. Audubon offers harm-reduction suggestions, but none establishes a safe outdoor setup.
Indoors, behind glass Keeps the loose decoration inside rather than in outdoor wildlife space. Avoids exposing outdoor wildlife to the webbing itself. Can provide a similar window or doorway display; the Canadian Wildlife Federation recommends this placement.

Safer ways to get a Halloween web look

Choose a window cling or decal applied indoors, or another decoration that does not stretch loose fibers through outdoor space. This is a decor alternative, not a product proven by the cited sources to prevent bird collisions or other harm. Audubon discusses window decals as a way to reduce bird collisions, but that does not establish that a particular Halloween cling is effective.

If you decide to use synthetic webbing despite the risk, Audubon suggests thicker rope, generous gaps, keeping it away from open flight areas, and checking it twice daily. These are harm-reduction measures, not guarantees: no cited source has measured their effectiveness, and checking does not eliminate the chance of entanglement between inspections.

What to do if an animal is caught

  1. Contact local wildlife help. Call a wildlife rehabilitator, veterinarian, or animal-care center for guidance and evaluation.
  2. Follow professional advice to get the animal to care. Audubon advises cutting the web around the animal and placing it in a bag or box for transport to the closest animal-care center. BirdLife Australia likewise recommends taking an entangled animal to a veterinarian or wildlife carer.
  3. Do not assume it is unharmed because it looks alert. Serious entanglement injuries, including restricted blood flow, may not be immediately visible. Avoid attempting treatment or prolonged handling yourself; let a local professional assess the animal.

What is known about the risk—and what is not

Wildlife-care sources report receiving animals after entanglement, but the Canadian Wildlife Federation says it cannot say how often it happens. The cited sources do not provide an incident rate, a controlled comparison of web materials, or evidence that inspection schedules and placement adjustments make outdoor synthetic webs safe.

Fall migration is relevant seasonal context: Audubon notes that Halloween coincides with migration, when birds may be unfamiliar with neighborhoods, stressed by travel, and looking for food. Audubon also reports an estimate of 988 million bird deaths from building-glass collisions annually in the United States (2024). That figure concerns glass collisions, not artificial spider-web incidents, and should not be read as a measure of web-related harm.
