Your dog may also be following a familiar routine, hoping for attention or food, looking for something to do, or seeking reassurance. The key question is whether your Boston can relax when you are away. New or worsening clinginess, or distress during absences, calls for closer attention.
Why Boston Terriers tend to stay close
The American Kennel Club describes Boston Terriers as highly sociable and bonded with their families, and notes that they do not fare well when left alone for extended periods. The breed standard calls them friendly and lively, with an excellent disposition and high intelligence. These descriptions help explain why an individual Boston may prefer your company, but they do not predict every dog’s temperament or mean every Boston will be clingy.

The Boston Terrier Club of America’s 2017 flyer puts the breed’s reputation vividly: “Bostons live for their owners; they are eager to please and prefer to be right by their owner’s side at all times.” That is the club’s characterization, not a measured finding about every Boston. Individual behavior also reflects experience, training, health, and household routine.

Social closeness or reassurance
Your dog may simply feel comfortable near a trusted person. If something is frightening or unfamiliar, staying close can also be a way to seek reassurance.

Routine and anticipation
Bostons can learn the household’s rhythms. If you usually feed, walk, play with, or give attention to your dog at particular times, they may follow you when they expect one of those things.
A behavior that has been rewarded
If following you often leads to petting, food, play, or conversation, your dog may learn that trailing you is worthwhile. Even attention you do not intend as a reward can make the behavior more likely to continue.

Curiosity or not enough to do
Your dog may want to investigate what you are doing, or may be looking for activity. Age- and health-appropriate exercise and mental stimulation can help meet those needs. Food puzzles or interactive toys are optional enrichment, not a treatment for separation anxiety.
Stress or a change in health
Clinginess can accompany fear, stress, illness, pain, aging, or changes in vision or hearing. A sudden change is worth noticing rather than automatically treating as extra affection.

Does following you mean separation anxiety?
No. Following you from room to room while you are home is not enough to diagnose separation anxiety. The important distinction is what happens when you leave: some dogs enjoy staying close at home but remain comfortable alone, while dogs with separation-related distress struggle during the absence.
Possible signs when left alone include persistent barking or whining, pacing, destructive chewing, or house-soiling. If your Boston repeatedly panics or shows distress during absences, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for an assessment and an individualized plan.

What to do if your Boston follows you everywhere
If your dog is relaxed when alone
- Provide suitable exercise and mental activity for your dog’s age and health.
- Reward calm settling on a bed or another designated spot, rather than only responding when your dog follows.
- Offer appropriate enrichment, such as a food puzzle, when your dog is comfortable using it.
- Practice short, comfortable periods at a little distance while you are home. Increase the distance or duration gradually, moving at a pace your dog can manage.
- Invite other household members to share walks and care so your dog has positive interactions with more than one person.
Do not punish your dog for following. If separation distress is present, enrichment and independence practice should not be treated as a cure; get professional guidance instead.

When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary check if the clinginess is new, sudden, persistent, or worsening, or if it comes with other changes in behavior or wellbeing. A veterinarian can assess whether health, pain, sensory changes, aging, fear, or stress may be involved. Repeated distress when your dog is left alone also warrants professional help.

How to judge what you are seeing
- Longstanding and relaxed: If your Boston has always preferred your company and settles comfortably when you are home but at a distance, the behavior may be ordinary closeness or a learned routine.
- New or worsening: Consider recent changes in routine or household, as well as possible health or sensory changes; seek veterinary advice if the change persists or concerns you.
- Distressed during absence: Repeated barking, pacing, destructive behavior, or house-soiling when left alone points to a need for professional assessment rather than assuming the dog is simply affectionate.
There is no Boston Terrier-specific published statistic in the cited sources that establishes how often the breed follows owners or develops separation anxiety. Breed descriptions can provide context, but your dog’s behavior and comfort are what matter.
