A small sore or scab on a cat’s ear is a sign, not a diagnosis. It may come from scratching, injury, mites, infection, sun damage, or a skin tumor. Because an early squamous cell carcinoma can look like a minor scratch or scab, have a sore checked if it persists, returns, bleeds, ulcerates, or grows—especially on a lightly pigmented ear tip.
Why a small ear sore can matter
Some serious lesions start out looking harmless. Cornell Feline Health Center reports that an early squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)—a type of skin cancer—may resemble a small scab or scratch, flake off, and appear to heal before returning months or even a year later. A lesion’s size or temporary improvement cannot establish that it is benign. Cornell’s overview of squamous cell cancer explains this pattern.
SCC is a particular concern on sparsely haired, lightly pigmented areas, including the ear tips. Cornell identifies sunlight as the strongest observed association for this form of SCC; white or lightly pigmented cats with sun exposure are more vulnerable. That does not mean every scab is cancer, but it makes a persistent or recurring sore on a pale ear tip worth prompt veterinary attention. VCA’s guide to skin SCC in cats describes the appearance and treatment considerations.
Possible causes of cat ear sores
A sore on the outer ear flap is not the same as debris or inflammation inside the ear canal. They can occur together, and a veterinarian may need to examine both. Several different problems can cause crusts, redness, hair loss, or scratching, so appearance alone is not enough to choose treatment.

Sun damage and squamous cell carcinoma
Solar dermatitis can begin with redness and dry skin along the ear margins, then progress to crusting and ulceration. In some cats, sun-damaged skin may develop into SCC. SCC lesions may be poorly outlined, scabby, ulcerated, oozing, pink, or accompanied by hair loss. These signs raise concern but do not confirm cancer; a suspicious skin lesion may need a biopsy for diagnosis. VCA’s information on solar dermatitis describes its progression and sun-related risks.
Mites, infection, and other ear-canal disorders
Ear mites can irritate the ear and lead to head shaking, scratching, hair loss from self-trauma, and dark, waxy or crusty discharge. Ear infections and other disorders can produce similar signs. Allergies, foreign material, or an abnormal ear-canal structure can also contribute to otitis, or inflammation of the outer ear canal. A crust alone is not proof of mites. See VCA’s guide to ear mites and its overview of ear infections in cats.

Scratching, injury, and other lesions
A cat may scratch an irritated ear until the flap is injured, or develop a sore after trauma such as a fight. Repeated scratching or shaking can also contribute to an aural hematoma, a painful swelling of the ear flap. Polyps and other ear disorders are additional possibilities. These problems can resemble one another or coexist, which is why a veterinary examination matters. Cornell’s guide to feline ear disorders discusses ear problems and the risks of self-trauma.
When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary evaluation if a sore persists, returns after seeming to heal, bleeds, becomes ulcerated, or grows. A sore on a lightly pigmented ear tip—particularly in a cat with sun exposure—also deserves attention. Call your veterinarian about persistent ear scratching or head shaking, even if the main concern appears to be inside the ear rather than on the flap.

The sources do not establish one universal emergency deadline for every small external sore. If your cat seems unwell or the ear is severely painful, seek veterinary advice about urgency rather than waiting for the lesion to change. For persistent scratching, Cornell advises against probing into the ear to look for the cause.
What the veterinarian may do
Check the ear canal and look for mites or infection
The veterinarian may examine the canal with an otoscope and inspect ear debris under a microscope when mites are suspected. A very sore ear may require sedation for a complete examination. For suspected otitis, the veterinarian may use cytology—examining a sample of ear material—to help select medication. Severe or chronic cases may need culture and susceptibility testing. Treating an infection without addressing its underlying cause can allow it to recur.

Assess a suspicious skin lesion
If the sore’s appearance or history raises concern for SCC, a biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Cornell describes biopsy under general anesthesia as a way to confirm SCC. Treatment depends on the lesion’s size, depth, and location; veterinary options can include surgery, radiation, cryotherapy, or other oncology approaches. The appropriate path depends on what the examination and tests establish—not simply on how small the sore looks.

- Do not probe or insert tools into the ear. Persistent scratching needs veterinary assessment, not an at-home search for the cause.
- Do not start mite medication based on crusting alone. Mites, infection, and other disorders can look alike, and the cause determines the suitable treatment.
- Limit further rubbing or scratching if you can do so safely. Ask the veterinarian whether a recovery collar or another form of protection is appropriate; it may help prevent self-trauma but does not diagnose or treat the sore.
- Do not apply human sunscreen without veterinary guidance. Some products may be toxic to cats, and cats may lick sunscreen from their skin. Ask your veterinarian about sun protection suited to your cat.
Until the cause is identified, avoid putting home remedies or unprescribed products on the sore or in the ear.
