A cat raising its rear when you pet it does not have one proven meaning. It may be leaning into a spot it enjoys near the tail, responding automatically to touch, feeling comfortable, communicating through scent, or—if it is an unneutered female—showing behavior associated with heat. The clue is the cat’s whole body and the circumstances, not the raised rump alone.
Why does a cat lift its butt when you pet it?
The gesture often happens when a person touches the base of the tail. Cats Protection lists several possible explanations, but none is established as the universal cause: a cat may be bringing a favored spot closer to your hand, reacting automatically to touch, feeling at ease, or communicating through scent. An unneutered female may also raise her rear when in heat, but the gesture by itself does not establish that she is in heat. Cats Protection explains the possibilities.

Preferences differ between cats, and the same cat may respond differently depending on mood or surroundings. Purina distinguishes a soft tap (“pat”) from continuous stroking (“petting”); a cat’s reaction to one does not necessarily tell you how it feels about the other. The tail base can be sensitive, so keep contact gentle and brief and watch for the cat leaning in or moving away. Purina’s guidance on butt pats is practical advice, not independent clinical research.
How to tell whether your cat wants you to continue
Pay attention to the cat’s response as you touch it. Leaning toward your hand can indicate willingness to continue; shifting away, turning to look at you, or signs of agitation are reasons to stop. The Humane Society of the United States’ 2025 Guide to Cat Behavior Counseling identifies tail swishing, raised hair along the back, skin twitching, looking back, sudden vocalizing, and shifting position as warning signs. - Stop and give space if the cat moves away, shifts position, hisses, swishes its tail, twitches its skin, raises its hair, or suddenly vocalizes.
- Do not insist on contact because the cat raised its rear. A familiar, mild gesture does not override signs that the cat wants a break.
- Allow a cooling-down period with no contact if petting triggers aggression. Cornell Feline Health Center recommends stopping petting and giving the cat time to settle. See Cornell’s guidance on feline aggression.
When a reaction may need a veterinarian’s attention
A familiar, mild rump lift during petting is different from a new or intense reaction. Arrange veterinary advice if touching the back or tail area suddenly seems painful, or if the cat’s skin ripples, it scratches frantically, bites, vocalizes, or becomes unusually aggressive. These signs can have causes other than ordinary enjoyment.
Cornell describes feline hyperesthesia as extreme skin sensitivity, often along the back and sometimes just in front of the tail. Possible signs include rippling skin, dilated pupils, sudden aggression or biting, intense scratching, and vocalizing. Diagnosis requires ruling out other causes, including pain in the sensitive area, spinal arthritis, parasites, allergies, and fungal infections. A veterinarian can assess what is behind the behavior rather than assuming it is hyperesthesia or a normal response to petting. What the raised rump alone can—and cannot—tell you
The gesture can accompany enjoyable contact, but it is not a reliable verdict on mood, permission to keep petting, or heat. Consider whether the cat leans in or withdraws, whether its tail stays relaxed or starts swishing, whether its skin twitches or hair rises, and whether the reaction is mild and familiar or new and uncomfortable. If the cat is unneutered and you suspect heat, look at the broader behavior and seek veterinary guidance rather than relying on this one movement.
