Shaking is a sign, not a diagnosis. A cat may tremble for several reasons, and you cannot determine the cause from shaking alone. Contact a veterinarian or emergency hospital now if your cat has severe tremors or a seizure, trouble breathing, collapses, cannot stand or walk, loses consciousness, appears to be in substantial pain, or may have encountered a toxin.
When shaking is an emergency
Seek immediate veterinary advice for severe or worsening tremors, seizure-like activity, breathing difficulty, collapse, inability to stand or walk, loss of consciousness, suspected poisoning, or substantial pain. Call the clinic or emergency hospital while you prepare to leave, if possible, and follow its instructions. These signs can reflect serious problems; waiting to see whether the shaking passes can delay needed care. Merck Veterinary Manual emergency guidance and Merck’s triage guidance describe emergency signs including seizures, breathing problems, collapse, and pain.

If your cat may have been poisoned
Call a veterinarian promptly, even if you are unsure what your cat contacted. Keep the product packaging or label and tell the clinic what may have been ingested and when. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. Severe tremors or seizures, an altered mental state, and inability to stand or walk after possible toxin exposure warrant emergency care. If your cat is injured
Minimize movement during transport. Merck advises placing an injured cat in a box with breathing holes and describes wrapping a cat in a towel to limit movement in an emergency-care context. Use a secure carrier if one is immediately available, but do not delay veterinary care to find or buy one. Merck’s emergency guidance provides further transport advice.

What could make a cat shake?
Possible explanations include low blood sugar in a diabetic cat, toxin exposure, cold exposure, pain or injury, and neurologic or other metabolic illness. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: shaking alone does not tell you which cause applies, and the cited veterinary guidance does not establish a complete list of causes.
Low blood sugar in a cat with diabetes
In a diabetic cat, hypoglycemia can cause weakness, lethargy, vomiting, poor coordination, seizures, or coma, and can be fatal if untreated. If your diabetic cat is shaking or showing these signs, contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not put food, liquid, or your fingers into the mouth of a cat that is convulsing or comatose. Cornell’s feline diabetes guidance describes these signs and the risk of untreated hypoglycemia; its instructions concern diabetic cats and should not be treated as a general home remedy for every shaking cat.

Possible toxin exposure
Tremors can occur with toxin exposure, but a cat may need urgent help even if shaking is not the only symptom. If exposure is possible, call a veterinarian and bring the product information rather than trying a home treatment. The VCA toxin guidance identifies severe tremors or seizures, altered mental state, and inability to stand or walk as emergency concerns.

Hypothermia is most often associated with being lost or exposed to freezing weather, but shivering by itself does not confirm it. The Merck Veterinary Manual states: “Shivering is not a reliable sign of hypothermia.” Its emergency guidance lists slow pulse, shallow breathing, confusion, collapse, and unconsciousness among concerning signs of hypothermia.

Pain, trauma, seizures, or metabolic illness
Shaking may occur in the context of pain, injury, seizure activity, neurologic disease, or metabolic problems. Merck notes that seizures may be associated with neurologic disease or metabolic derangements, including hypoglycemia and toxin exposure, and that pain can appear as behavioral or physical changes. - Call a veterinarian or emergency hospital and describe the shaking and any other symptoms.
- Share relevant details, including known diabetes, possible toxin exposure, recent cold exposure, injury, or signs of pain.
- If poisoning is possible, bring the package or label. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian instructs you to.
- For a cat that is injured, minimize movement during transport and follow the clinic’s directions.
- Do not put anything in the mouth of a cat that is convulsing or unconscious.
If the shaking is mild or its seriousness is unclear, contact your veterinarian for advice rather than assuming the cat is merely cold or frightened. The available guidance does not establish a reliable home observation threshold that can rule out a serious cause.
