Why Cats Spray: Territorial Marking, Causes, and What to Do

Spraying is scent marking, but urination outside the litter box can have medical or environmental causes. Learn what signs to watch for and how to respond.

Cat spraying is usually scent communication: a cat deposits a small amount of urine to mark a place or signal its presence. But urinating outside the litter box can also stem from a medical problem or a litter-box issue, so a new or changed pattern deserves a veterinary assessment before you treat it as behavior alone.

How to tell spraying from other house-soiling

Typical spraying involves a cat standing, lifting and sometimes quivering its tail, then leaving a small amount of urine—often on a vertical surface such as a wall, door, or piece of furniture. Cats use the scent to announce their presence or maintain boundaries; intact cats may also mark in connection with mating. Spraying is not exclusive to unneutered males: females and neutered cats can spray too. Cornell Feline Health Center and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines describe urine marking as a behavioral form of scent communication.

Ordinary urination outside the box more often involves squatting and leaving a larger volume on a horizontal surface, but those clues are not definitive. Cats can mark horizontal surfaces, and medical or litter-box problems can also lead to urination outside the box. Note the posture, amount, location, frequency, and whether your cat still urinates normally in the box; this history can help your veterinarian, but it cannot establish a diagnosis. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of cat behavior problems for additional context.

Why a veterinary check comes first

Urinary tract inflammation and other medical conditions can change how or where a cat urinates, and an affected cat may not look obviously sick. Cornell recommends identifying the cat involved and arranging a physical examination and appropriate diagnostic tests. Contact your veterinarian about any new or changed urination behavior rather than assuming it is purely territorial. The appearance of a deposit can provide clues, but only a veterinary assessment can evaluate possible medical causes.

Common triggers for territorial marking

After medical causes have been considered, look for changes that may have made the home feel less predictable or secure. Possible triggers include:

  • A new cat in the home, conflict between resident cats, or cats visible outdoors.
  • Changes to the household schedule or family, renovations, new furniture, or unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells.
  • Frustration or insufficient opportunity for play.

Consider what changed shortly before the behavior began and map where the cat marks. Deposits near windows or doors may help direct attention to outdoor cats or territorial tension; marks in prominent household locations may point to social or environmental stress. These patterns can suggest what to investigate, but they do not prove a cause. The ASPCA’s guidance on urine marking also discusses possible household triggers.

What to do about spraying

  1. Arrange a veterinary assessment. Describe the timing, locations, posture, amount, and any other changes in urination. Your veterinarian can assess medical causes and help distinguish marking from other elimination problems.
  2. Address likely triggers. If outdoor cats appear to be a trigger, limiting your cat’s view of them may help. For conflict between resident cats, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional about separation, resource distribution, and a gradual reintroduction plan.
  3. Make the home easier to navigate. Provide adequate access to litter boxes in suitable locations and clean them regularly. Distribute food, water, resting and scratching resources so cats do not have to compete for them. Include play and safe elevated or resting spaces.
  4. Clean marked sites thoroughly. Neutralize the odor with a cleaner designed for pet odors; the ASPCA recommends an enzymatic cleanser. An enzymatic cat urine cleaner can help with odor at the site, but cleaning alone does not remove the medical, social, or environmental trigger.
  5. Do not punish the cat. Merck Veterinary Manual states, “Positive punishment is contraindicated, because it increases fear and anxiety in an already anxious animal.” Punishment can add stress rather than address what is driving the marking.
  6. Get professional guidance if it persists. Discuss ongoing marking or medication with your veterinarian or a qualified veterinary behavior professional. Do not give medication without veterinary direction.

Does neutering stop spraying?

Spaying or neutering can reduce hormone-related marking, but it does not guarantee that spraying will stop. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidance says spraying may continue after neutering and cites a small study of 17 free-roaming cats in which spraying almost disappeared after neutering. The sample is too small to predict what will happen for an individual household cat. Cornell’s page, updated in January 2015, reports that 10% of neutered males and 5% of spayed females continue to spray; those figures are estimates reported on that page, not an individualized forecast. AAHA/AAFP guidance and Cornell’s house-soiling guidance provide the underlying qualifications.

Optional aids—and their limits

A synthetic feline pheromone product, such as a feline pheromone diffuser, may help some cats, according to Cornell, the ASPCA, and Merck. Treat it as an adjunct to addressing triggers and meeting the cat’s needs, not as a guaranteed fix. Neither pheromone products nor cleaning products diagnose or treat a medical cause; ask your veterinarian whether an aid makes sense for your cat.
