Learning to notice their signals makes those moments more meaningful—and helps us respect that every cat has a personality of its own.
1. Their subtle signals invite you to pay attention
Cats communicate through posture, movement, sounds, and scent. Their signals can be easy to misread if we assume they express themselves just as people do. Look at the whole cat and the situation: relaxed posture, a twitching tail, flattened ears, or an attempt to move away can change how a gesture should be understood. Cats Protection’s 2025 behaviour guide notes that cats are sensitive to scent and that their visual signalling differs from ours.

2. A slow blink can be a quiet greeting
A cat that slowly closes and opens its eyes while relaxed may be offering a friendly signal. You can try a gentle slow blink back, then give the cat space to respond or look away. It is a charming exchange, not a universal translation of “I love you”: context and the individual cat matter. Cats Protection includes slow blinking among the behaviours people may notice when a cat feels comfortable with them (“5 signs your cat loves you”; 2025 behaviour guide).

3. Head bumps and cheek rubs make familiar greetings
A cat may brush its cheek against you or gently bump its head against you as a friendly greeting. These behaviours also share familiar scent, making them a distinctive part of how cats interact with people and their surroundings. Cats Protection describes rubbing and head-bumping as signs owners may recognize in a familiar relationship (“5 signs your cat loves you”; 2025 behaviour guide).

4. Kneading is a behaviour with kitten roots
When a cat rhythmically presses its paws against a blanket, cushion, or lap, it is kneading. Kittens knead around the teat while nursing. Some cats carry the behaviour into adulthood, but its precise purpose in adult cats is not established with certainty. That uncertainty does not make the familiar, rhythmic motion any less endearing.
5. Purring is a memorable sound, not a happiness meter
A purr can make a relaxed cat’s company feel especially soothing, but purring alone cannot tell you how a cat feels. Cats may also purr when stressed or in pain, so consider posture, behaviour, and circumstances alongside the sound. Cats Protection explains this range of contexts in its guide to why cats purr.

6. An upright tail can turn an arrival into a greeting
A cat approaching with its tail held upright may be showing a friendly, welcoming signal. The small details of a reunion—your cat appearing at the doorway or weaving toward you—can become part of a shared language. As with any body signal, read it alongside the cat’s posture and the rest of the situation rather than treating it as a fixed promise about mood.

7. Getting to know one cat is its own reward
Some cats are bold and talkative; others are cautious, playful, or content to observe. Their distinct preferences make the process of learning an individual cat rewarding. Clinical Animal Behaviourist Nicky Trevorrow, quoted by Cats Protection, puts it this way: “While there are behaviours that are true for most cats as well as a few things that should be avoided, each cat is an individual. Getting to know your cat is one of the most fulfilling things about becoming a cat owner.”

8. Everyday routines create companionship
Meals, play, and the familiar rhythms of sharing a home can give people and cats regular moments of connection. These routines are not proof that every cat has the same needs or that ownership produces a particular health outcome. They are simply a practical way a bond can grow through repeated, attentive care.
9. Quiet company counts, even without cuddles
A cat does not have to sit on your lap to share your company. Curling up nearby, resting in the same room, or choosing a spot from which to watch you can make a quiet evening feel companionable. Respecting a cat’s preference for distance is part of making that shared space comfortable for both of you.

10. Affection is best when the cat welcomes it
For a cat that enjoys contact, gentle stroking or grooming can become a pleasant shared moment. But not every cat likes extended petting, being picked up, or close handling. Let the individual cat guide the interaction: offer a hand, notice whether it stays or moves away, and stop if it seems uncomfortable. Cats Protection’s information sheet on cats and people discusses possible benefits of companionship while recognizing that cats differ in their tolerance for contact.

Laser pointers can frustrate cats if they cannot catch the “prey,” so choose play that gives the cat a satisfying chance to engage with an object.
12. The human–cat bond matters to many households
People value cats for many different reasons, but the bond is personal rather than uniform. Cats Protection’s 2025 behaviour guide reports estimates from the CATS Report 2025 of around 10.2 million owned cats in the UK and at least one cat in around one-quarter of UK households. Those figures show how common cat ownership is in the UK; they do not mean cats behave alike or prove a particular health effect.
A separate ASPCA article published August 4, 2021, reported results from a historical US pandemic-era poll of 5,020 respondents: close to one in five surveyed households had acquired a cat or dog during the COVID-19 crisis, and 85% of cats acquired by those households were still in the home. It is a snapshot from that period, not a current or global rate. In that context, ASPCA CEO Matt Bershadker said, “People still recognize and appreciate the essential role pets play in their lives.”
For many people, loving a cat means enjoying the relationship on the cat’s terms: learning its signals, noticing what it likes, and giving it room to be itself. The ASPCA’s discussion of the human–companion animal bond likewise recognizes the importance of that relationship without making it a guarantee of a particular outcome.
