Cats’ eyes seem to glow because light reflects off a layer inside the eye. Their eyes do not make light, and the glow does not mean cats can see in total darkness.
What makes a cat’s eyes glow?
A cat’s eyeshine is reflected light. Behind the retina is a reflective tissue layer called the tapetum lucidum. Some light passes through the retina without being absorbed the first time; the tapetum reflects it back through the retina, giving the eye another opportunity to detect it. Light that returns out of the eye can look like a glow to someone viewing the cat. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Merck Veterinary Manual describe this reflective layer and its role.
Why does the tapetum help cats in dim light?
Reflecting light through the retina a second time helps cats make use of limited available light. Veterinary references commonly describe cats as much more sensitive to dim light than people: Cornell estimates feline light sensitivity at about six times that of humans, while Merck says cats see six times better in dim light. These are estimates reported by veterinary references, not a primary-study result verified here. The tapetum improves vision in low light; it does not provide vision in absolute darkness. Cats Protection also discusses the connection with the low-light conditions around dawn and dusk.
Why do cats’ eyes shine when light reaches them?
“Glow in the dark” is everyday shorthand: eyeshine requires light to reach the eye and reflect back. A cat may look as if its eyes are shining when light from the surroundings or a camera reaches them. Without incoming light, there is no eyeshine. You do not need to shine a flashlight into a cat’s face to see the effect.

What color should a cat’s eyeshine be?
The Merck Veterinary Manual describes a characteristic blue or greenish glint. The references cited here do not explain every possible color variation, so hue alone should not be treated as a diagnosis or as proof of a particular health condition.
When should a change in eyeshine concern you?
Ordinary reflected eyeshine is a normal optical effect. A noticeable change in the reflection, or a difference between the two eyes, is a reason to consult a veterinarian, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Cornell also identifies cloudiness, unequal pupil sizes, and squinting as signs to watch for. These signs do not identify a cause on their own, but they warrant an assessment; Cornell notes that earlier diagnosis can improve the prospects for treating vision problems.
