Cats can have black lips because their lip skin contains melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Flat black spots on the lips of an orange or orange-faced cat may be lentigo simplex, a common benign pigmentation pattern. But while feline pigment and coat colors have a genetic basis, the evolutionary sources available do not establish a specific adaptive reason for black lips.
Why do cats have black lips?
The dark color comes from melanin in the epidermis—the outer layer of the skin. The Atlas of Feline Anatomy for Veterinarians notes that melanin occurs in feline lip skin, so pigmentation there is not inherently unusual.
Some cats have a broadly dark lip, while others develop distinct, flat dark marks. In orange and orange-faced cats, those spots may be lentigo simplex, a common pigmentary change described by the Merck Veterinary Manual and the anatomy reference.
What are the black spots on my cat’s lip?
A common pattern in orange cats
Lentigo simplex typically appears as flat, dark spots. They may affect the lips and can also occur on the gums, eyelids, and nose. Veterinary references particularly associate this pattern with orange or orange-faced cats. It often becomes noticeable as a cat matures, and spots may increase in number over time; the sources differ on the age when marks first appear, so there is no single age that applies to every cat.

What benign means—and what it does not
The Merck Veterinary Manual describes lentigo spots as having no medical consequence and as not precancerous. The anatomy reference reports no apparent increased risk of other diseases, including melanoma, in cats with lentigo. Those descriptions apply to lentigo; they do not identify every dark mark around a cat’s mouth.
An article cannot determine what a particular cat’s lesion is. If a mark is changing or otherwise concerns you, have a veterinarian assess it rather than assuming it is lentigo.

How do genes affect a cat’s pigmentation?
Feline color is influenced by genes that affect pigment type, amount, and distribution, according to the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Some colorpoint patterns also involve temperature-sensitive pigment production. These mechanisms explain aspects of feline coat and color patterns in general, but they do not by themselves explain why an individual cat has dark lips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How did black lips evolve?
The sources support a biological explanation based on melanin and feline pigmentation, but they do not establish a specific evolutionary history or adaptive purpose for black lips in domestic cats. A broader review of mammalian and felid pigment evolution does not document a selection pressure for this particular trait. It would therefore be speculation to say that black lip pigment evolved to protect cats from sunlight, signal health, or improve survival.

The clearest answer is that dark lip skin reflects pigmentation; in some orange cats, spots are consistent with lentigo simplex. Why that pigmentation occurs as an evolutionary adaptation, if it does, remains unestablished by the sources cited here.
