Some appear to prefer its source, and moving water may act as a cue of freshness—but no single explanation fits every cat. A cat’s interest in a tap does not mean all cats prefer running water, or that a fountain will make every cat drink more.
Why a running faucet can catch a cat’s attention
Movement, sound and reflections
A stream of water is a changing visual and sensory stimulus. A cat may watch it, reach toward it, or try to drink from it because the motion, sound or reflections are engaging. Faucet behavior can also be play or curiosity rather than evidence that the cat is unusually thirsty. Cats Protection describes these kinds of reactions, including watching and pawing at running water, in its discussion of why cats love running water.
A possible freshness cue—not a proven explanation for every cat
Animal-welfare guidance sometimes explains the appeal of moving water as an instinctive sign of freshness, drawing on cats’ evolutionary history. That is a plausible account, not proof of what an individual cat is thinking. A cat might simply like the tap, its location, or the opportunity to play.
Individual preference matters
There is no sound basis for saying that cats universally prefer running water. Royal Canin Academy’s review of domestic cats’ drinking habits notes that direct research on preferences has been limited. In its owner questionnaire, most cats with access to both a bowl and a fountain were reported to prefer the bowl. What owner observations can—and cannot—tell us
The Royal Canin Academy article summarizes 549 questionnaires, mostly from Germany and Austria, with some responses from Switzerland. The publication year is not shown on the page. These are reported household observations, so the figures describe that survey’s respondents rather than a global prevalence or a controlled test of cat behavior.
- More than 80% of surveyed cats were offered water in bowls.
- Nearly 60% were observed, daily or occasionally, drinking from other sources, including watering cans, flowerpots or human dishes.
- 44% were reported to both drink and play with water.
- 41% of surveyed households placed a water bowl right next to the food bowl.
The results show that some cats use or interact with water sources beyond their bowls; they do not establish that cats generally prefer faucets or fountains.

How to offer water if your cat seeks the faucet
You can accommodate a cat’s interest without leaving a tap running. Start with several clean, appealing options and observe which ones your cat actually uses. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that some cats enjoy running water, while its hydration guidance also recommends practical ways to make water available.
Improve the bowl setup
- Put water in more than one quiet location, away from the litter box. If your cat avoids a bowl beside its food, try separating them.
- Provide fresh water and wash bowls daily.
- Try different locations, water temperatures, and bowl shapes or materials. These are individual experiments; there is no single bowl type established as best for every cat.
- Use good-quality tap water if it is suitable in your area. If it has a strong or unusual smell, Royal Canin Academy suggests filtering it or offering another suitable water source.
Consider a fountain only if it suits your cat
A filtered pet fountain can provide moving water without keeping a faucet open. It is an option to try, not a guaranteed way to increase drinking; some cats may prefer a bowl or dislike a fountain. Keep a bowl available alongside it. VCA recommends cleaning the fountain filter weekly or as directed by its manufacturer.

Remember water in food
Wet food contains more moisture than dry food and contributes to a cat’s total fluid intake. How much water a cat needs also varies with diet, body size, activity, environment and health. Seeing a cat drink infrequently does not, by itself, reveal its total hydration. Do not change a diet to manage a medical condition without veterinary advice.
Keep curious cats away from unsafe liquids
Exploration can bring cats to water sources that are not safe to drink. Keep cleaning products, pesticides and antifreeze inaccessible, and do not leave cups of coffee, tea or energy drinks within reach.

When a change in drinking deserves veterinary attention
A steady, long-standing preference for faucet water is not, by itself, described by these sources as a diagnosis. A new, sustained increase in thirst or urination is different: note the pattern and contact a veterinarian if the change is unexplained or occurs with other signs. PetMD’s veterinary-authored guidance lists weight loss, lethargy, appetite changes and changes in urination among signs to watch for. Temporary changes in weather, humidity or diet can affect drinking, but they do not rule out a health issue. If you are unsure whether your cat’s pattern has changed, describe what you have observed to your veterinarian rather than restricting access to water.
