Most cats that curl up on their owner’s clothes are choosing a familiar-smelling, soft resting place. Worn shirts, pajamas and other garments can carry your scent, provide warmth and give a cat a comfortable surface. A cat may also leave some of its own scent there, creating a familiar shared scent.
Those are plausible reasons, not a single proven explanation for every cat. Sleeping on clothes does not by itself prove love, separation anxiety or illness. The useful distinction is whether the habit is stable and otherwise normal, or whether it appears suddenly alongside changes in sleep, appetite, toileting, movement or mood.

What attracts a cat to your clothes?
Your familiar scent
Scent is central to how cats understand people and places. A worn garment carries the smell of the person who wore it, so it can make an otherwise ordinary pile of fabric feel familiar. Purina US describes this directly: “Your cat might be sleeping on your clothes because they are comforted by the familiar scent of you.” (Purina US, updated June 10, 2026.)
HumanePro’s Guide to Cat Behavior Counseling gives related context. In an example about a stressed cat whose owner is away, the guide describes comfort in “meshing my scent with my owner’s.” That is an illustrative behavior-counseling example, not a study proving that every cat deliberately seeks out clothing, but it helps explain why an owner’s scent can matter when a cat settles down (Humane Society of the United States, HumanePro, 2025).

Softness and warmth
Clothing is also a practical bed. Fabric folds create a cushioned surface, and a heap of garments may feel warmer than a hard floor or an exposed shelf. Purina lists warmth and softness as additional reasons cats may choose clothes. That does not mean every fabric pile is warmer than every other sleeping place; the appeal depends on the room, the garment and the alternatives available.
A familiar shared scent
When a cat lies on clothing, its own scent can be deposited on the fabric while your scent remains there. Purina presents scent marking as another possible part of the behavior. “Marking” here should be understood as scent exchange or familiarization, not proof that the cat is making a territorial claim over you. The same spot can simply become recognizable and reassuring.
Does sleeping on clothes mean my cat loves me?
It can be consistent with comfort and trust, but the location is not a precise emotional test. A cat may select clothes because they smell familiar and feel good, even when it is not trying to communicate a particular message. Some cats sleep beside their people, some choose a garment, and some rotate among several places during the day.

A cat that seeks a familiar scent while its owner is out may be using an ordinary comfort cue; anxiety is more likely when there are additional signs such as persistent vocalizing, destructive behavior, inappropriate elimination, appetite changes or agitation. Clothing-sleeping by itself cannot establish that diagnosis.

Why worn clothes may be more appealing than a clean bed
A clean commercial bed may be soft, but it may not smell like the person your cat knows. A recently worn shirt, sweater or pair of pajamas combines a comfortable surface with a familiar human scent. This is why adding a familiar-scented item to an otherwise suitable bed can make that bed more attractive.
There is no established rule that cats prefer one specific textile, laundry product or clothing type. Individual preference, temperature, location and the cat’s other choices all matter. Avoid treating a cat’s selection of one garment as evidence that it needs a particular fabric.
Is the habit normal or a reason to call the veterinarian?
A stable habit is usually just a preference
If your cat has long chosen clothes, is eating and drinking normally, uses the litter box normally, moves comfortably and behaves as usual when awake, the sleeping location alone is not presented as a health warning in the available veterinary guidance. You can allow it if the garment and the surrounding area are safe.
A sudden change deserves context
Pay attention when the sleep pattern changes abruptly, the cat sleeps much more or much less, cannot settle, or stops using its usual places. Cats Protection advises veterinary attention for disrupted sleep patterns or changed behavior: “Seeking veterinary advice to rule out medical problems is always the first step for cats with disrupted sleep patterns or changed behaviour.” (Cats Protection, The Importance of Sleep, The Cat, Summer 2014.)

Contact a veterinarian promptly if the new sleeping behavior occurs with any of the following:
- reduced appetite or thirst, vomiting or diarrhea;
- difficulty jumping, walking, breathing or getting comfortable;
- hiding, unusual irritability, confusion or persistent vocalization;
- changes in urination or defecation;
- markedly disrupted sleep or a general change in daily behavior.
The key issue is the change and the accompanying signs, not the clothing itself.
When fabric becomes a safety problem
Sleeping on clothes is different from chewing or swallowing them. Keep garments away if your cat pulls threads, eats fabric or damages clothing. The reviewed guidance does not establish fabric ingestion as an ordinary part of sleeping behavior. If you know or suspect that your cat swallowed cloth, thread or elastic, call your veterinarian for advice rather than waiting for the behavior to resolve.

- Choose a suitable location. Put the bed in a warm, quiet area where your cat already likes to rest. Avoid a busy walkway, loud appliance or place that is difficult for an older or mobility-limited cat to reach.
- Use a soft, washable bed. Cats Protection recommends warm, quiet sleeping options and washable soft beds. Washability matters because the bed will collect hair and scent; follow the care label and avoid leaving damp bedding available.
- Add a familiar-scented item. Place a safe blanket or an item of clothing carrying your scent on or beside the bed. The goal is to make the new place recognizable, not to cover it in strong perfumes or cleaning fragrances.
- Keep the location consistent. Moving the bed repeatedly can make it harder for the cat to learn that this is the alternative resting spot.
- Reward voluntary use. When your cat settles there, offer calm praise or a small reward that is appropriate for its diet. Do not drag the cat to the bed or punish it for returning to clothing.
- Redirect gently when necessary. If the cat climbs onto unsafe or off-limits laundry, move the garment out of reach and guide the cat toward the prepared bed. Expect repetition; cats may continue rotating among several preferred sleeping places.
Choosing an alternative resting spot
There is no required product or tested model. Compare possible locations by the features that affect a cat’s comfort and your ability to maintain the space.
| Option | Warmth and softness | Quiet and access | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washable cat bed | Softness depends on the filling and cover; warmth can be increased with a safe blanket. | Place it in a quiet, easy-to-reach area. | Easy to clean and to keep in one consistent location. |
| Folded blanket on a chair or shelf | Can provide a soft, familiar surface. | Choose a stable surface that the cat can reach safely. | Use a washable blanket and prevent falls from high or unstable furniture. |
| Familiar clothing in a designated basket | Combines your scent with a soft surface. | Keep the basket in a calm, accessible place. | Use only garments the cat cannot chew or swallow; store risky items elsewhere. |
| Existing favorite resting spot | May already meet the cat’s comfort needs. | Retain it if it is quiet and safe. | Add a familiar-scented washable layer instead of forcing a new location. |
A bed is optional, not a treatment for anxiety and not a guarantee that a cat will stop choosing clothes. The practical aim is to offer a safe equivalent and reinforce its use.
How to interpret the behavior alongside your cat’s routine
Look at the whole pattern
Note when your cat chooses clothes: only when you are away, after you return, during cold weather, after play or at many different times. Also note appetite, grooming, litter-box use, mobility and social behavior. A consistent pattern with normal activity is more reassuring than a sudden, unexplained shift.
Respect individual variation
Cats differ in how much contact and scent they seek. One may sleep on a shirt, another on a blanket that has been in the owner’s room, and another on a perch with little human contact. None of these choices, by itself, measures the strength of the relationship.

What adjacent veterinary behavior advice adds
Veterinarian and board-certified veterinary behaviorist Wailani Sung, MS, PhD, DVM, DACVB, discusses cats that sleep on a person’s head rather than on clothing. Her adjacent guidance identifies warmth, familiar scent, trust and closeness as possible factors and recommends offering a nearby soft bed and rewarding gentle redirection (PetMD, updated February 9, 2026). Because that article concerns head-sleeping, it should not be read as a clothing-specific study; it is useful context for understanding why a cat may choose a warm, familiar location near its person.
Common questions about cats sleeping on clothes
Why does my cat sleep on my worn clothes?
Worn clothes can provide your familiar scent, a soft surface and warmth. Scent exchange may also make the spot familiar to the cat.
Should I stop my cat from sleeping on laundry?
Only if the clothes are unsafe, damaged, contaminated, needed immediately or difficult to keep hygienic. Otherwise, the behavior is generally a preference you may allow.
Will putting my shirt in a cat bed work?
It may make the bed more inviting because the item carries a familiar scent. Keep the bed soft, washable, quiet and easy to access, and reward voluntary use.
Does this prove my cat has separation anxiety?
No. Clothes-sleeping alone cannot diagnose anxiety. Look for persistent distress or other behavior changes and consult a veterinarian if those occur.
What if my cat suddenly starts sleeping on clothes all day?
Assess the change with the rest of the cat’s health and behavior. Disrupted sleep or a broader behavior change warrants veterinary advice to rule out medical problems.
