Dogs may slow down as they age because movement has become painful or difficult, their strength or senses have changed, or a medical or cognitive condition is affecting them. Arthritis is one common cause of reduced mobility, but a new or worsening slowdown should not automatically be dismissed as old age: several problems can occur at once.
Why do dogs slow down as they age?
The pattern can offer clues. A dog that hesitates to rise, climb stairs, jump, or walk on slick flooring may be responding to pain or unsteady footing. A dog that tires easily or slows across many activities may have a broader health problem. Changes in sleep, house-training, social behavior, or awareness point to a different set of concerns than movement alone.
Age itself does not identify the cause. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) states in its 2023 Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats that “old age is not a disease.” Senior dogs may have more than one concurrent health issue, so a new or progressive change deserves assessment rather than an assumption that it is normal aging.
Common causes of a slower pace
Arthritis and other painful mobility problems
Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Signs may include taking longer to get up or lie down, limping, changing posture, or reluctance to walk, play, jump, or use stairs. Notice when the difficulty appears: after resting, on longer walks, when turning on a slippery floor, or when getting into a car. These details can help a veterinarian assess the problem.

Arthritis is not the only possible source of pain. Orthopedic, spinal, paw, or nail problems can also affect movement, so age and slowness alone cannot confirm a diagnosis. A short video of your dog walking, rising, or managing a familiar step can help the veterinary team evaluate mobility, as AAHA notes in its senior-care guidance.
Changes in strength, body condition, or senses
Changes in muscle condition, vision, or hearing can make movement more cautious or home surroundings less predictable. Slowing may also reflect reduced conditioning, but it is important to distinguish that from pain or illness. A veterinarian can assess muscle and body condition alongside sensory and mobility changes; AAHA discusses these checks in its senior-patient guidance.

Heart or respiratory disease
Exercise intolerance can be an early sign of heart disease. Cornell notes that early mitral valve disease may cause subtle signs that owners mistake for aging or arthritis. Other possible signs include coughing, faster or difficult breathing, weakness, or collapse. AAHA also lists fatigue, reluctance to exercise, breathing difficulty, and abdominal swelling among signs associated with heart disease.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if these signs appear. Difficulty breathing at rest or collapse warrants urgent veterinary care. See Cornell’s overview of mitral valve disease and AAHA’s senior-care guidance.

Kidney, endocrine, or other chronic illness
Chronic disease can affect energy as well as appetite, thirst, and weight. Watch for progressive lethargy, appetite changes, increased or altered thirst, weight loss, or changes in urination alongside reduced activity. These signs are not specific to one condition, so a veterinarian must consider the history and examination rather than infer a diagnosis from a single symptom.
Depending on the dog’s health and findings, senior assessment may include a blood count, blood chemistry, urinalysis, and thyroid testing. Further tests are selected for the individual dog; these checks do not diagnose every possible cause. AAHA describes the signs and assessment approach in its senior-care guidelines.

Cognitive dysfunction
Cognitive changes can develop gradually and may coexist with physical illness. Cornell’s DISHAA framework helps owners track changes in disorientation, social interaction, sleep-wake cycles, house-training or learned behaviors, activity, and anxiety. A dog whose routine or behavior has changed may need assessment even if walking is not the main concern. Record what you observe and discuss it with a veterinarian, who can consider other causes too. See Cornell’s guide to canine cognitive dysfunction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether the change needs attention
Consider how quickly the slowdown began, whether it is getting worse, and whether it affects one movement or your dog’s overall energy. A gradual change limited to stairs or rising may suggest a mobility problem; tiredness across activities, or slowing paired with changes in appetite, thirst, weight, cough, or breathing, makes a broader health assessment especially important. These patterns are clues, not a way to diagnose at home.

- Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty at rest or collapse.
AAHA’s 2024 owner guidance recommends examinations every six months for senior pets, including those that appear healthy. It describes visits that may include an examination, dental and behavioral assessment, and selected diagnostic testing. This is AAHA guidance, not a universal interval for every dog or jurisdiction. AAHA’s owner information also uses older than 7 years for its stated senior-pet recommendation, while its life-stage guidance explains that senior status varies by dog and defines the canine senior stage relative to the last 25% of estimated lifespan.
What to note before a veterinary visit
- Write down when the slowdown began, whether it is worsening, and which activities have changed.
- Note appetite, weight, thirst and urination, sleep, behavior, coughing, and breathing changes.
- If it is safe and does not distress your dog, take a short video of walking, rising, or using familiar stairs. AAHA identifies movement videos as useful assessment material.
- Bring your observations and video to the appointment so the veterinarian can assess the history alongside an examination and any appropriate tests.
Ways to make movement easier at home
For a dog with mobility difficulty, a dog ramp for easier access or nonslip floor runners may make familiar routes less challenging. AAHA also lists orthopedic bedding and harnesses or slings among possible accommodations. Choose support that suits your dog’s abilities and your home layout; a ramp will not suit every dog. These aids can improve access, but they do not establish or treat the cause of the slowdown.
Do not give human painkillers or start supplements without veterinary advice. AAHA cautions that supplements and other nutraceuticals can have interaction and toxicity concerns, so review them with your veterinary team.
