Your cat may choose your clothes because they are soft, warm and saturated with a familiar human scent. That combination can make a laundry pile feel safer and more comfortable than a new, unscented bed. Cats also commonly rotate among several sleeping places, so ignoring one bed is not automatically a problem.
The useful question is whether this is your cat’s long-standing preference or a sudden change accompanied by pain, illness, hiding or other unusual behavior. The preference itself is usually harmless; a change in the pattern may deserve closer attention.

Why your clothes can beat a cat bed
Familiar scent makes the spot feel safe
Smell is a major part of how cats assess their surroundings. Clothing that has been worn carries your individual scent, and a trusted person’s smell can make a resting place feel familiar. Cats Protection explains that cats rub scent glands on the face, body and paws onto objects, helping mark an area as safe. Your clothes may therefore function as a familiar, reassuring “home base” even when the bed is objectively softer or more expensive.
Some cats prefer unwashed laundry specifically because it smells like their owner. Others prefer freshly washed or tumble-dried items because they are warm and comfortable. The same cat can choose either type at different times. Cats Protection quotes an expert identified as Nicky: “Some cats prefer dirty laundry, just because it smells familiar to them and it has the scent of the owner of them whereas other cats prefer clean laundry and this could because if it’s been freshly tumble dried it’s going to be nice and warm, it’s a safe place to sleep.”

Clothes provide the texture and temperature a cat wants
Jerseys, fleece, towels and piled-up shirts compress under a cat’s weight and retain body heat. Freshly dried laundry may be especially attractive because it is warm. A commercial bed can lose this comparison if its filling is too firm, its fabric is slippery, or it sits in a cold or draughty area. Your cat is responding to the actual surface and temperature, not to the fact that an item was sold as a pet bed.
A clothing pile can offer privacy
A heap of clothes creates edges and folds that let a cat tuck its body away. That partial cover can be appealing in a busy home, particularly if the bed is in an exposed walkway. A cat that settles between garments may be choosing enclosure and reduced disturbance as much as scent.
Is choosing clothes normal?
Usually, yes. Cats Protection states that cats tend to rotate their sleeping places—“Whether it’s a box, the laundry pile or even a suitcase, cats tend to rotate their sleeping place, which is a normal behaviour.” One cat may use a bed every night; another may alternate among clothing, a sofa, a windowsill and the floor. The same cat may change locations as the room temperature, household activity or available scents change.

Domestic cats commonly sleep for approximately 12 to 18 hours per day, according to Cats Protection. That is a broad description of normal feline sleep, not a target or a diagnostic threshold for an individual animal. What matters most is your cat’s own established pattern: where it sleeps, how easily it gets up, and whether its eating, movement, grooming and social behavior remain typical.
Why the bed may be less appealing
A bed can fail for practical reasons that have nothing to do with stubbornness. Consider the following attributes rather than assuming your cat should prefer the bed because it is designated for sleeping:
- Location: A noisy, brightly lit, damp or draughty position may feel unsafe. A bed beside a washing machine, busy doorway or frequently handled appliance can be less restful than clothing in a quiet room.
- Access: High sides, a narrow entrance or a raised platform may be difficult for a kitten, older cat or cat with pain or reduced mobility.
- Shape: Some cats want a flat mat; others prefer raised sides that create a snug boundary. There is no universal best design.
- Odor: New materials, detergents or strong household scents may be unfamiliar. The bed may become more acceptable after it carries your cat’s scent.
- Exposure: A completely open bed can feel vulnerable if the cat cannot retreat or observe the room from a protected position.
These are possible explanations, not a test that identifies one cause. Watch what your cat does immediately before settling: does it knead a soft surface, seek a corner, choose warmth, climb upward or move away when people pass? That observation helps you alter the relevant feature.

How to make the bed more appealing
Offer the bed as an additional choice rather than trying to eliminate every alternative. Cats Protection guidance emphasizes a warm, quiet, dry, draught-free location, soft bedding, privacy, easy access and more than one option.
- Move the bed to a calm, comfortable site. Choose a dry area away from persistent noise and cold airflow. Keep a clear route to the entrance so the cat does not have to squeeze past people or obstacles.
- Add a familiar scent. Place a blanket your cat has already slept on in the bed. You can also use a recently worn, clean item that is safe for the cat to lie on. The aim is familiarity, not a strong perfume or detergent smell.
- Match the texture your cat seeks. If the cat chooses fleece, knitwear or towels, try a similarly soft layer. If it burrows into folds, use a bed with soft raised sides or a loosely arranged blanket. This is a reasonable option, not a guarantee of acceptance.
- Provide privacy without trapping the cat. Position the bed beside a stable piece of furniture or in a quiet corner, while leaving the entrance unobstructed. A cat should be able to leave easily.
- Offer a height option when appropriate. If your cat repeatedly sleeps on shelves or the back of a sofa, provide a stable raised resting place. It must be secure and easy to reach, particularly for cats that are young, elderly or affected by joint or balance problems.
- Present more than one sleeping place. Put beds or mats in different quiet locations and let the cat select among them. Rotating is normal, so success may mean occasional use rather than exclusive use.
- Give the change time. Avoid repeatedly placing the cat in the bed or moving it every few hours. Let the cat investigate and leave on its own terms.
Should you stop your cat sleeping on clothes?
There is no behavioral need to train a cat away from a harmless preference. The practical issue is household safety: keep clothing away from strings, small objects, medication, chemicals, pins, batteries and anything that could be chewed or swallowed. Close laundry hampers if garments are becoming a route to hazardous items, and keep damp clothes from becoming a persistently wet sleeping surface.
You can redirect without punishment by placing a familiar blanket on the bed, moving the bed near the preferred laundry location, or offering a second bed with the same softness. Scolding, forcibly removing a settled cat or repeatedly presenting an unwanted bed can make the resting area feel less safe. There is no guaranteed product or method that overrides an individual cat’s choice.

When a change in sleeping habits may signal a health problem
The location or posture alone cannot diagnose illness. Pay attention when the pattern changes meaningfully from your cat’s normal behavior, especially if the change persists or appears with other signs of pain, illness or discomfort. Cats Protection advises contacting a veterinarian when sleeping more than usual or hiding more may indicate an underlying issue.
Contact your veterinarian promptly if you notice combinations such as:
- Sleeping substantially more or less than usual for your cat.
- Hiding, withdrawing or avoiding normal interaction in addition to the sleep change.
- Difficulty jumping, climbing into the bed, standing up or walking normally.
- Reduced appetite or thirst changes, vomiting, diarrhea or altered toileting.
- Persistent restlessness, repeated repositioning, vocalization or a guarded posture.
- Changes in grooming, breathing, weight or general energy.
A cat that has always preferred your laundry and otherwise acts normally is different from a cat that abruptly abandons every usual sleeping place and curls up in an unusual location. Record when the change began and any accompanying symptoms so you can describe the pattern accurately. Do not wait for a particular sleeping position to “prove” a diagnosis.

Rather than ranking clothes and beds as right or wrong, compare the features your cat is selecting. A laundry pile may offer familiar scent, warmth, softness, cover and a quiet location all at once. If you reproduce only one feature—for example, buying a soft bed but leaving it in a draughty hallway—the cat may still reject it.

| Several locations in rotation | Choice and environmental variation | Keep multiple beds or mats available in quiet areas. |
The table describes practical experiments, not tested rankings. A cat may reject an option for reasons you cannot see, and acceptance can change over time.
A simple decision checklist
Use this sequence when you are unsure whether to change anything:
- Ask whether the clothing preference is longstanding or sudden.
- Check for other health or behavior changes.
- If the cat is otherwise well, compare the clothing spot and bed for scent, warmth, softness, privacy, height, noise and access.
- Improve one or two features and add a familiar-smelling layer.
- Keep an alternative sleeping place available rather than insisting on one bed.
- If the change persists with signs of pain, illness, discomfort or increased hiding, arrange veterinary advice.
Bottom line
Your cat chooses your clothes because they can combine the scent of a trusted person with the warmth, softness and privacy of a comfortable nest. Cats commonly rotate sleeping locations, so using laundry instead of a purchased bed is usually normal. Make the bed quiet, warm, soft, familiar-smelling and easy to access, but let your cat keep its preferred options. Treat a sudden, persistent change—especially one paired with hiding, pain or other illness signs—as a reason to consult a veterinarian.
