Most cats swallow some hair while grooming themselves, but repeatedly chewing or swallowing a person’s hair has no single proven explanation. A loose strand may simply trigger an opportunistic nibble or a learned habit. Persistent eating of hair—especially alongside chewing plastic, fabric, string or other non-food items—can fit the veterinary definition of pica and deserves a medical and behavioral assessment.
Hair cannot be digested. A small amount usually passes through the intestines, but accumulated hair can form a hairball, and a large or attached strand can contribute to a dangerous obstruction. Remove access to loose hair and hair accessories, brush your cat regularly, and contact a veterinarian promptly for repeated vomiting, unproductive retching, appetite loss, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, or any string-like material visible in the mouth.

Why a cat may target human hair
Normal grooming explains some hair swallowing
A cat’s tongue has backward-facing, roughened structures that lift loose coat hair during grooming. The hair is made largely of keratin, which the digestive system cannot break down. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center explains that most swallowed coat hair leaves in the feces; some remains in the stomach and gathers into a hairball.
This normal process does not, by itself, explain why one cat seeks a person’s hair. Human hair has a different texture and smell from a cat’s coat, and the sources available for this topic do not establish a universal reason cats chew it. A strand dangling from a pillow, brush, clothing or a person’s head can be an immediately available object to bite. If a cat is allowed to repeat the behavior, the access itself can become a learned routine.

When the pattern may be pica
VCA Animal Hospitals defines pica as persistent ingestion of non-food material, including items such as plastic, paper, fabric, string or thread. Possible contributors listed by VCA include gastrointestinal disease, anemia, anxiety, compulsive disorders, malnutrition and other medical conditions.
One observed nibble is not enough to diagnose pica. Concern rises when your cat repeatedly seeks, chews or swallows hair, cannot be redirected, or also consumes other non-food objects. Record the pattern and share it with your veterinarian rather than trying to identify the cause at home.
Overgrooming can add to the hair load
A cat that is licking or pulling at its own coat unusually often may swallow more hair than usual. Cornell notes that excessive grooming can sometimes accompany a skin problem such as an allergy. Human-hair chewing and overgrooming can occur together, but one does not prove the other; skin irritation, stress and gastrointestinal disease require separate evaluation.

How risky is swallowed human hair?
Hairballs and obstruction
Hair is indigestible, so risk depends on the amount swallowed, whether it clumps, and whether it moves through the gut. A small strand generally passes without an obvious problem. A larger mass can remain in the stomach or move into the intestine and obstruct it. Cornell describes intestinal blockage from a hairball as uncommon but serious. Richard Goldstein, DVM, of Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine, has warned that an obstruction requiring surgery can be fatal without intervention. That statement concerns a lodged intestinal hairball, not ordinary hair chewing.
There is no established “safe” quantity of human hair for a cat. The general veterinary sources do not provide a measurable threshold, so do not assume that a particular length or number of strands is harmless.
Why extensions and accessories change the hazard
Loose hair is not automatically the same as yarn or thread. However, hair extensions, braided pieces, elastic ties, clips, sewing thread and similar accessories may add long, thin or anchored components. VCA describes these as linear foreign bodies: one end can catch under the tongue or in the stomach while the rest is pulled through the intestine. The intestine can bunch, tear or perforate, allowing life-threatening peritonitis.

Merck Veterinary Manual’s obstruction guidance is explicit: never pull a string-like object from a cat’s mouth. Pulling an anchored strand can cut or perforate tissue. Treat visible thread, yarn, tinsel, an extension attachment or a strand trapped under the tongue as a veterinary problem, even if your cat currently seems comfortable.

Vomiting and appetite changes can have many causes, so symptoms cannot prove that hair is the cause. They do determine how quickly your cat should be assessed.
| What you see | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated vomiting or repeated dry retching | May accompany a hairball, obstruction or another illness; unproductive retching is specifically a warning sign in Cornell’s guidance. | Contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not wait for another episode if your cat appears acutely ill. |
| Refusing food, marked lethargy, weakness, hiding or abdominal discomfort | These can occur with gastrointestinal disease or obstruction and are not safely distinguishable at home. | Arrange urgent veterinary evaluation. Cornell advises assessment when a cat is lethargic or refuses food for more than a day or two; seek help sooner if the change is severe or sudden. |
| Unable to keep food or water down, signs of dehydration, or a painful abdomen | Fluid loss and obstruction can worsen quickly. | Call an emergency veterinary service or your veterinarian immediately. |
| Hair, thread, yarn, tinsel or an extension visible in the mouth or under the tongue | A linear foreign body may be anchored internally. | Do not pull it, cut it or induce vomiting. Keep your cat calm and contact a veterinarian for instructions. |
| Repeated hair seeking without illness signs | Persistent non-food ingestion can be pica or a response to an underlying medical or behavioral issue. | Book a routine appointment and bring a record of frequency, amount and other objects eaten. |
What to do after you see your cat swallow hair
- Remove the opportunity. Move loose strands, brushes, hair extensions and accessories away from the cat. If the cat is still chewing, calmly interrupt access rather than grabbing at the mouth.
- Check what was swallowed. Note whether it was a short loose strand, a clump, an extension or hair attached to thread, elastic or a clip. Do not probe the throat.
- Watch for illness. Over the next period, observe appetite, water intake, energy, litter-box use, vomiting and retching. Write down times and changes so you can give the veterinarian a precise history.
- Call for advice when the object is uncertain. A veterinarian can decide whether examination, imaging or observation is appropriate based on the material and symptoms.
- Avoid home “flushes.” Do not induce vomiting, give oil, a laxative, supplements or a hairball remedy unless a veterinarian specifically directs it. Cornell cautions against using laxatives or commercial diets to address a suspected obstruction without veterinary approval and supervision.
How to reduce access to human hair
Make loose strands harder to find
- Tie up or cover long hair when your cat is actively trying to chew it.
- Empty hairbrushes and dispose of shed hair in a closed bin rather than leaving it on a floor, pillow or bathroom counter.
- Store extensions, wigs, hair ties, clips, thread and craft materials in closed drawers or containers.
- Check bedding, laundry and grooming areas for strands before allowing unsupervised access.
These access controls reduce opportunities; they have not been established as a cure for compulsive ingestion. If your cat continues to search for hair, arrange a veterinary assessment.

Redirect without punishment
When you catch the behavior, block access calmly and offer a safe activity your cat already enjoys, such as a food puzzle, a play session or a supervised toy that does not contain loose string. Punishment can increase fear and does not identify the underlying cause. Keep any toy with cord, ribbon or dangling parts under supervision and remove it after play.

Cornell recommends daily brushing and combing to remove loose coat hair and reduce hairball formation and complications. Merck Veterinary Manual also identifies regular grooming as a hairball-management measure. Choose a tool your cat tolerates and use it gently; forcing a session can create skin injury or make grooming aversive.

| Tool approach | When it may fit | Safety and practical checks |
|---|---|---|
| Soft bristle or rubber brush | Short or close coats and cats that dislike firm pulling. | Confirm the bristles do not scratch; clean collected hair after each session. |
| Comb with spaced teeth | Longer coats or areas where you need to detect tangles. | Work in small sections and stop before a tangle pulls the skin. |
| Fine-toothed de-shedding tool | Only when the cat accepts it and the coat benefits from controlled removal of loose undercoat. | Use light strokes and follow the tool’s instructions; overuse can irritate or thin the coat. |
There is no single best brush for every cat. Coat length and texture, skin sensitivity, ease of cleaning and the cat’s tolerance are more useful selection criteria than a marketing claim. Brushing reduces loose coat hair; it does not directly treat a cat that persistently eats human hair.

When repeated hair eating needs a workup
Keep a behavior and symptom log
For one to two weeks, if your cat remains otherwise well, record the date and setting of each episode, what type of hair was involved, whether it was swallowed or spat out, how much you could estimate, and what happened immediately beforehand. Note any chewing of plastic, fabric, paper or string, changes in grooming, vomiting, stool, appetite, weight, energy or household stress. A short video can help if it can be taken without delaying care.
What the veterinarian may consider
The veterinarian will use the history and physical examination to decide whether medical causes, behavior, or both are plausible. The differential can include gastrointestinal disease, anemia, nutritional problems, anxiety-related behavior, compulsive disorders and skin disease. Depending on findings, the clinician may recommend tests or imaging; the appropriate plan cannot be selected from the hair-eating behavior alone.
Do not change the diet, start supplements or give medication in an attempt to treat pica without guidance. Treating an underlying illness is different from simply preventing access to hair, and both may be needed.

Merck notes that some commercial cat foods and treats are formulated to help prevent hairball formation. They are not a way to dissolve or push through a suspected obstruction. Cornell advises veterinary approval and supervision for commercial diets used in an obstruction context. If your veterinarian thinks a hairball-management diet is appropriate, ask how to transition safely, how success will be judged, and what symptoms should trigger a recheck.
A practical safety rule
If the episode was a brief nibble of loose hair and your cat is eating, drinking and behaving normally, remove access, begin regular gentle brushing and monitor. If hair eating is recurrent, broadened to other non-food objects, or accompanied by excessive grooming, schedule a veterinary visit. If vomiting repeats, retching produces nothing, food or water will not stay down, your cat becomes weak or painful, or any string-like material is visible, seek veterinary help promptly and never pull the material from the mouth.
