Your cat may sleep beside you because your warmth, bedtime routine, interactions, or the space you leave on the bed feels especially comfortable and predictable. It does not mean your cat loves your husband less. These are plausible explanations, not a way to diagnose exactly what your cat is thinking.
Why might my cat choose my side of the bed?
Cats vary in how sociable they are with people and in what makes them feel secure. Your cat’s choice may reflect several ordinary features of the household rather than a single preference for one person.

1. Your presence feels familiar and predictable
A cat may settle beside the person whose presence and bedtime routine feel most consistent or comfortable. Small patterns—when someone gets into bed, how they respond to the cat, or whether they make room—can become familiar. The cat may be choosing a warm patch of bedding, a comfortable body position, or a spot with pleasant contact. Warmth is among the positive experiences cats may seek, and a veterinarian-authored PetMD overview of why cats sleep on people lists it as one possible reason for sleeping near a person’s head. The details of your bed—blankets, space, and temperature—may matter as much as who is lying there.

3. Your interactions suit the cat
Positive, consistent, predictable interactions are part of a healthy environment for cats. 4. Your sleep habits leave a better place to settle

5. The cat wants closeness or companionship
Some cats seek contact or company from particular people. A cat that curls up beside you may simply enjoy being close, and attention or companionship may be part of the appeal. That does not mean every cat who sleeps on a person has the same motive.

Does sleeping with one person mean the cat loves the other less?
No. Sleeping location is not a reliable measure of affection or attachment. Veterinary guidance recognizes that cats differ in sociability and in how they experience interactions; it does not directly compare one household cat’s attachment to two spouses. - Differences in bedding or scent, and any recent household changes.

These observations can suggest what your cat finds comfortable, but they are not validated tests of its motive. A 2021 study discussion reviewed by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior found owner presence more clearly comforting than an owner-scented object in a brief stressful setup; the discussion also notes methodological limitations. That evidence is not a test of why a cat chooses one spouse’s side of the bed, so scent alone should not be treated as a proven explanation.
How can we encourage the cat to sleep somewhere else?
If you want to redirect the cat, offer an appealing alternative close to the bed, such as a quiet cat bed or perch, and reward the cat for using it. Avoid punishment: the Merck Veterinary Manual warns that positive punishment can damage the human-cat bond and trigger aggression or other unwanted behavior.
