She may have learned that her crate is a familiar, comfortable place to settle and sleep. A predictable bedtime routine can also become a cue to go there. If she enters willingly and settles calmly, that is consistent with a positive association—but going into the crate alone cannot tell you exactly what she feels or why she chose it.
Why your dog may choose her crate at night
It has become a familiar resting place
With patient, positive introduction, a crate can become a place where a dog settles and relaxes. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that dogs trained carefully may voluntarily curl up in their crates when ready for a nap. That makes a comfortable, familiar resting spot a plausible explanation for bedtime visits, though it does not establish the motive of any individual dog. VCA’s crate-training guidance describes how to build that association.
Bedtime has become a cue
Dogs can learn patterns in daily routines. If going to bed is regularly followed by a quiet crate and sleep, the routine may cue her to enter. This is a reasonable explanation for the timing, not proof that every dog has the same preference or that crate use is instinctive.
How to tell relaxed settling from distress
Look at what happens after she enters, not just the fact that she goes in. Calm settling is different from distress during confinement. Cornell lists excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, drooling, and elimination among signs that a dog may be highly stressed by confinement. These signs warrant reassessing whether and how she is being confined; they do not, by themselves, diagnose the cause.

If she shows persistent distress, do not force her to remain crated alone. Cornell suggests considering a larger safe area, a pet sitter, or help from a veterinarian or qualified trainer. A crate also should not mean extended confinement without chances for elimination, play, exercise, and other natural behaviors. See Cornell’s guidance on crate use and selection.
How to support a positive crate association
- Choose a quiet location and provide comfortable bedding and familiar toys.
- Reward her for entering voluntarily; treats or a food-filled toy can encourage a positive experience.
- Let her get comfortable before making confinement part of the routine. For puppies specifically, the American Animal Hospital Association advises waiting to close or lock the crate until the puppy is happy to choose to rest there; it also says nighttime crating is optional.
Cornell describes these settling supports in its guidance for fearful dogs, and UC Davis discusses using treats and food-filled toys in puppy crate training. UC Davis cautions that crating may not reduce anxiety in a dog with separation anxiety and may make it worse; seek veterinary guidance if anxiety is a concern.

Does choosing the crate mean she should sleep there?
Not necessarily. Voluntary entry can be part of a comfortable routine, but it does not mean every dog needs to sleep in a crate, nor does it rule out discomfort if distress appears once the door is closed. For puppies, AAHA specifically describes night crating as optional. Whether to use a crate should depend on the individual dog’s comfort and needs, not on the assumption that all dogs prefer one.

If you are selecting or adjusting a crate, consider whether its size and setup allow comfortable rest, along with the material and durability. Cornell discusses a partly covered wire crate as one possible arrangement, with one or two sides left open; it is an option, not a universally suitable setup or a tested product recommendation.
