Dogs may chew cardboard because it is interesting to investigate, satisfying to shred, or part of normal chewing and play. The key distinction is whether your dog spits the pieces out or repeatedly swallows them: eating non-food items can be a sign of pica and can create a risk of choking or intestinal blockage. Keep cardboard out of reach when you cannot supervise, redirect chewing to suitable activities, and contact your veterinarian if your dog repeatedly eats it or may have swallowed enough to cause a problem.

Why do dogs chew cardboard?

Chewing cardboard alone does not reveal why a dog is doing it. Dogs may chew or shred objects as play, to investigate them, while teething, or to meet a normal urge to chew. A dog that shreds a box and leaves the pieces is behaving differently from one that regularly swallows them. Veterinary behavior guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals describes several possible reasons for destructive chewing, but the object itself is not enough to identify a cause.

When chewing becomes eating

Persistent ingestion of non-food objects is called pica. It may have behavioral or medical contributors; possibilities a veterinarian may consider include anxiety, frustration, gastrointestinal conditions, parasites, anemia, malnutrition, diabetes, or appetite changes related to medication. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis or an explanation that applies to every dog that chews cardboard. VCA’s overview of pica and the American Kennel Club’s pica guidance discuss these potential causes.

Why swallowing cardboard is a concern

Swallowed material can cause choking or a gastrointestinal obstruction, and sharp pieces may injure the digestive tract. The veterinary guidance available does not establish a safe amount of cardboard for a dog to swallow, so do not assume that a small piece is harmless. An obstruction can be serious; the AKC’s guidance on bowel obstruction advises seeking veterinary attention as soon as you suspect a dog has ingested something that could cause a blockage.

How to stop cardboard chewing safely

1. Prevent access when you cannot watch

Put boxes and packaging in closed storage or a lidded bin, and use barriers or a dog-safe area to keep them out of reach when your dog is alone or otherwise unsupervised. Management matters especially if your dog swallows pieces: training cannot make an accessible box safe when nobody is there to intervene.

2. Redirect and reward the behavior you want

If you catch your dog chewing cardboard, calmly offer an appropriate activity and reward the dog for engaging with it. Teach “leave it” and “drop it” gradually with rewards, rather than relying on a confrontation over the object. VCA advises against punishment for pica because it can increase anxiety and potentially worsen the behavior. See VCA’s pica guidance for its discussion of management and training.

3. Choose enrichment for your individual dog

Food-filled rubber toys and other enrichment can give a dog an appropriate activity. Choose toys and chews with the dog’s size and chewing style in mind, and supervise use; a toy is not proven safe for every dog. VCA’s enrichment guidance emphasizes individual consideration and supervision. Do not leave a dog alone with cardboard as a shredding activity: VCA warns, “Always supervise your dog, as bits of cardboard can become a choking hazard.”

4. Get help if ingestion keeps happening

Repeatedly eating cardboard or other non-food objects warrants a veterinary conversation rather than an assumption that the dog is bored or needs a diet change. A veterinarian can review the history, examine the dog, and determine whether testing or a behavior referral is appropriate.

When to contact a veterinarian

Call your veterinarian if your dog repeatedly eats non-food items, even if the dog seems well, so possible medical and behavioral causes can be assessed. Seek prompt veterinary advice if you suspect your dog swallowed material that could obstruct the digestive tract. Vomiting, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, weakness, or other signs of illness make the situation more urgent. Do not induce vomiting or wait for the cardboard to pass unless a veterinarian directs you; there is no cardboard-specific home treatment established in the guidance cited here.
