A dog sitting on your workout bench may simply have chosen a place it likes to rest. Dogs can value particular resting spots, and some guard them—but the height of the spot alone does not show why your dog chose it or whether it is guarding it. What matters most is how your dog behaves when someone approaches.
Why might a dog choose a workout bench?
The most supportable explanation is that the dog values that particular resting place. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center and Dogs Trust describe preferred resting spots as resources dogs may guard; the Merck Veterinary Manual also includes resting places among resources around which aggression can occur.
Those sources do not establish that dogs generally seek high places, or that a workout bench is appealing because of its height or view. Comfort, familiarity, and the surrounding context may be possibilities for an individual dog, but the spot alone cannot tell you which factor is at work. A 2023 preprint on free-ranging dogs found that resting-site selection in that population related to proximity to resources, visibility, shade, and disturbance. Its findings are not evidence that household dogs choose workout benches for those reasons.
Does sitting there mean your dog is guarding it?
No. Resting on a raised surface, by itself, does not establish guarding, aggression, or dominance. Watch what happens when a person comes near or asks the dog to move. Dogs Trust lists behaviors such as blocking access to a favorite resting place, growling when someone approaches the bed, and refusing to move from a settled spot as possible signs of guarding. One behavior in isolation is not a diagnosis; consider the situation and the dog’s overall response.

- May simply be resting: The dog settles without threatening behavior when someone approaches.
- Worth taking seriously: The dog blocks access, stiffens, growls, snaps, or persistently refuses to move when approached.
What should you do if your dog guards the bench?
- Reduce immediate risk. If access to the bench could lead to a confrontation, prevent access when you can do so safely. Do not punish warning signals or physically drag the dog off a guarded spot.
- Offer another place to rest. Set up a separate, quiet resting area. Dogs Trust notes that a quiet location may help a dog feel more relaxed. A dog bed or cot is one possible option, but there is no evidence here that an elevated bed prevents guarding or will make a dog stop choosing the bench.
- Arrange a veterinary check if the behavior is new. Dogs Trust advises a vet check when guarding behavior is new. A veterinarian can help assess a change in behavior and advise on next steps.
- Get qualified behavior help if there is a threat or bite risk. If your dog stiffens, growls, snaps, has bitten before, or you think someone may be bitten, do not try to resolve the guarding on your own. The ASPCA recommends qualified behavior support when warning signs appear. Merck describes rewarding a dog for voluntarily giving up an item as one training approach; that is not a reason to forcibly remove a dog from a guarded spot.
What a raised bed can—and cannot—do
A dog bed or cot can provide a designated alternative resting place if one suits your home and dog. It should be treated as an option, not a fix: the available evidence does not show that raised beds prevent resource guarding or stop dogs from seeking workout benches. Choose the resting arrangement based on your dog’s needs and whether the spot can be used safely.
