Why Dogs Sniff So Much on Walks—and What They Learn From It

Sniffing is a normal way for dogs to explore. Here’s what they may learn from odors, what research can—and cannot—show, and how to make room for safe sniffing on walks.

Your dog stops to sniff because scent is one of the main ways dogs explore their surroundings. Those pauses can reveal that other animals have been nearby and let a dog investigate at its own pace. A sniff-focused walk offers valuable mental enrichment, but it does not automatically replace the physical exercise an individual dog needs.

Why dogs stop to sniff

For dogs, a walk is more than getting from one place to another. Smells provide information about the environment, including traces left by other animals. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes sniffing and searching for odors as a way dogs gather information about their surroundings and the animals that share them. A 2024 review likewise characterizes sniffing and searching for odors as natural, species-typical behavior that is essential for canine welfare.

Dogs’ noses are built for this kind of investigation. AKC cites a widely repeated comparison of more than 200 million scent receptors in dogs’ noses versus about six million in humans; those figures are not a new measurement from the studies described here. AKC also gives five to 10 sniffs per second as a typical rate, not a pace every dog maintains in every situation.

What a sniff can—and cannot—tell your dog

A dog may detect that another animal passed through an area and use the scent trail to explore what is there. In a 2018 behavioral experiment, dogs followed odor trails flexibly and showed measurable surprise when the object at the trail’s end did not match the odor they had followed. This supports the idea that dogs can use odor to guide a search and form expectations in that experimental setting.

That does not mean a person can translate a particular pause into a specific message. The available evidence does not establish what an individual dog learns from a given neighborhood smell, or that each sniff is a conscious report about a particular animal.

Sniffing changes how odors reach the nose

A 2017 canine nasal airflow simulation found that sniffing delivered about 2.5 times more air to the olfactory recess than quiet breathing. In the model, sniffing also produced 2.5–3 times more uptake per unit time of highly and moderately soluble odorants in the sensory region. These are modeled physiological results, not measurements of dogs sniffing outdoors on walks.

Dogs notice changes to odors

In a 2017 “olfactory mirror” test, dogs investigated their own odor for longer when it had been modified with an additional odor. The finding supports odor discrimination; it does not show that dogs understand their reflection or experience self-awareness in the human sense.

What makes a sniff walk different

A sniff walk gives scent exploration priority over covering ground quickly. The handler allows the dog to set the pace and choose where to investigate, within safe limits. A brisk exercise walk, by contrast, puts more emphasis on pace and distance. The two approaches can be combined: a walk may include both stretches of purposeful movement and time to stop and sniff.

AKC guidance describes sniff walks as mental enrichment with some physical activity. How much exercise a dog needs beyond that depends on factors including age, breed, health, and energy level. A short sniff-focused outing may be enriching, but there is no established duration that makes it an adequate exercise plan for every dog.

How to give your dog safe room to explore

  1. Choose a suitable location. Look for a quiet area where your dog can investigate without being led into traffic, unsafe ground, or other hazards.
  2. Use equipment that you can manage. AKC suggests a well-fitting harness and a 10–15-foot long line to give a dog room to explore while staying connected. A long line is optional, not a requirement; choose equipment that suits your dog, your handling ability, and the location.
  3. Allow the dog to set the pace within safe bounds. Pause when it is safe, and keep the line under control. Reel it in or shorten it when needed to avoid entanglement or hazards.
  4. Watch the whole dog, not just the nose. Loose posture and a soft expression can accompany relaxed investigation. Tension or hypervigilant sniffing may occur with stress, but body language alone is not a diagnosis.

AKC trainer Staci Lemke compares a rushed, no-sniff walk to being taken to an art gallery blindfolded: without the chance to investigate, a dog may miss much of what makes the outing enriching. Trainer Penny Leigh notes that sniff walks can be especially useful for urban dogs without yards or safe fenced spaces to explore freely. These are practical perspectives, not controlled-study findings.

Does sniffing calm dogs or make them happier?

AKC says research suggests sniffing may make dogs feel more optimistic, and scent-focused outings can give them enrichment and choice. That emotional benefit is best treated as a possibility, not a guaranteed effect. The stronger supported point is that sniffing is normal behavior and that safe opportunities to explore are a welfare consideration. A sniff walk should not be treated as a cure for anxiety or a reliable way to calm every dog.

If sniffing is accompanied by fear, distress, compulsive behavior, or a health concern, seek individualized advice from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.
