Why Dogs Sniff So Much on Walks—and When to Pay Attention

Sniffing is a normal way for dogs to investigate the world. Learn when to let your dog explore, how sniff walks fit into exercise, and which accompanying signs deserve veterinary attention.

Dogs stop to sniff because scent is one way they investigate their surroundings. On a walk, those pauses can be purposeful exploration and mental enrichment—not automatically disobedience, anxiety, or illness. The useful clues are your dog’s usual pattern, body language, and whether physical symptoms or a sudden behavior change accompany the sniffing.

Why dogs stop to sniff on walks

A walk gives a dog access to scent traces left by other animals and changes in the environment. Following those smells is a way to gather information, so a dog that pauses over a patch of grass may be investigating rather than simply delaying the walk. PetMD describes smell as a major way dogs interpret their surroundings in its guide to scent walks.

Some dogs investigate a particular scent and then leave a urine mark of their own. VCA notes that prolonged sniffing at one location can precede marking. If marking is not appropriate there, calmly guide your dog toward a suitable area rather than treating the sniffing itself as a problem. See VCA’s guidance on dog marking behavior.

What makes a useful sniff walk?

A scent-focused walk is paced around safe opportunities to explore, rather than distance or brisk movement. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends that dogs on an on-leash enrichment walk be allowed to safely investigate at their own pace. A quieter route with interesting scents can make that easier.

That does not mean every outing should be slow, or that sniffing replaces exercise. Scent walks provide mental enrichment and some physical activity, but dogs’ exercise needs vary with factors such as age, breed, health, and energy level. Use a mix of walk styles that suits your dog, and keep leash control and route safety in mind. The American Kennel Club discusses both enrichment and individual exercise needs in its guide to sniff walks.

Walk style Main purpose Pace and setting
Brisk or practical walk Cover ground and provide physical activity More purposeful pace; route depends on the outing
Scent-focused walk Let the dog explore smells for enrichment Dog-paced pauses on a safe route, ideally with room to investigate

These are different ways to structure an outing, not competing rules. A dog may need both, and the right balance depends on the individual.

How to tell ordinary exploration from a possible concern

There is no established diagnostic threshold for “too much” sniffing, and sniffing alone does not show that a dog is anxious or ill. Compare the behavior with your dog’s normal habits and consider what is happening around them.

  • Body language: Relaxed, engaged exploration differs from sniffing accompanied by tension, hypervigilance, or an inability to settle. The AKC’s sniff-walk guidance describes this distinction; the behavior by itself does not diagnose stress.
  • Pattern: General investigation along a walk is different from a striking, sudden change or a repetitive pattern that disrupts normal activity.
  • Physical signs: Persistent sneezing, excessive nasal discharge, or discharge crusted around the nose warrants a call to a veterinarian. VCA’s urgent-care guidance for nasal and respiratory signs identifies trouble breathing as an emergency.

If the sniffing has changed noticeably, note when it happens and whether anything else has changed. Contact your veterinarian if it comes with persistent nasal signs or other concerning changes; seek emergency care for difficulty breathing.

Indoor scent games for days a walk is impractical

Food-search games and snuffle mats can offer indoor nose work. The American Animal Hospital Association suggests hiding food for a scavenger hunt or using a snuffle mat so a dog can find treats by scent. You can use some of your dog’s regular food for the activity. These are optional enrichment ideas, not substitutes for outdoor walks or exercise suited to your dog. See AAHA’s indoor enrichment suggestions.
