Dogs take toys from other dogs for different reasons: they may want the toy, be trying to start an interaction, or be guarding access to something valuable. The act alone doesn’t reveal which motive is at work. Pay attention to both dogs’ body language and whether the exchange stays relaxed or turns tense.

Why does a dog take another dog’s toy?

A dog may simply be interested in the toy, or may take it to invite or continue play. In other cases, taking or keeping the toy is part of controlling access to a valued object. Dogs differ in what they value, and the same behavior can have different motivations; the toy theft itself is not a diagnosis. Veterinary guidance notes that stealing behaviors can arise for different reasons and need responses suited to the situation: VCA Animal Hospitals on stealing behavior.

Resource guarding is one possibility. It can happen with toys as well as food or other valued items. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains that guarding may be genetic or learned, while Dogs Trust describes fear of losing a valued item as a common reason for guarding: Cornell’s guidance on anxious behavior and guarding and Dogs Trust’s resource-guarding guide.

How to tell play from possible guarding

There is no validated single body-language cue that tells you why a dog took a toy. Look at the full interaction: whether both dogs appear loose and willing to disengage, whether tension builds around possession, and whether conflict recurs around the item. Cornell describes guarding as behavior such as growling, posturing, threatening, or biting when another animal or person approaches or touches something the dog values. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) describes a range of possessive behaviors that can include freezing, gulping faster, growling, a hard stare, snarling, snapping, or biting.

What you observe What it may mean What to do
The dogs remain relaxed and appear willing to disengage The exchange may be play or interest in the toy; the action alone does not establish the motive. Continue to supervise and watch both dogs, rather than assuming every toy exchange is harmless.
A dog freezes, stiffens, stares hard, growls, snarls, snaps, or threatens when approached These can be signs of distress or guarding around the item. No single cue is a definitive test. Calmly interrupt and create distance. Don’t test whether the dogs will work it out.

A wagging tail by itself does not prove that an interaction is safe. Interpret posture and behavior together, and give the dogs space if tension appears.

What to do if the dogs become tense over a toy

  1. End access to the contested toy and make space. Calmly separate the dogs without reaching into a confrontation or forcibly taking an item from a dog that is guarding it.
  2. Keep trigger items out of shared play. Put away toys or chews that repeatedly cause conflict, and offer them separately so each dog can enjoy them without competition. Separation manages the setup; it does not establish that the underlying emotion has changed. Cornell discusses environmental management, and Dogs Trust recommends managing access to valued items in guarding situations.
  3. Teach a trade or “leave it” in low-pressure situations. AVSAB’s reward-based approach teaches a dog to leave a tempting item in exchange for something better. Practice away from conflict; this is not a do-it-yourself exercise when a dog is already threatening or likely to bite. See AVSAB’s “How to Teach ‘Leave It’”.
  4. Ask for professional help when the risk rises. Contact a veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional if the behavior is new, escalating, aggressive, or difficult to manage safely. A veterinarian can also help assess a behavior change; Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview covers behavior problems and the role of professional guidance: Merck Veterinary Manual: Behavior Problems of Dogs.

Why taking the toy is not proof of a problem

Some exchanges may be part of interaction; others may involve guarding. The distinction matters because encouraging competition over a coveted toy can create avoidable risk, while responding to every theft as aggression may misread the dogs. Observe the whole interaction and manage access whenever either dog shows tension. The sources cited here do not establish a prevalence figure for dogs taking toys from other dogs, so a percentage would not be appropriate.
