Dogs often sleep near their owners because closeness can feel comforting and safe. They are social animals, and resting beside a familiar person may suit their preferences and household routine. But dogs differ: one may choose the bed, another a dog bed beside it, and another a crate or a different room. Sleeping nearby alone does not mean a dog has separation anxiety, and sharing a bed is not right for every household.
Why do dogs choose to sleep near their owners?
Closeness can feel safe and comforting
Dogs are social animals, and resting near familiar members of their social group can provide comfort and a sense of safety. Nicholas Dodman, a veterinary behaviorist at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, described this as one reason dogs enjoy sleeping near people. Nighttime is a long, quiet period, so a familiar person and a familiar routine may make the chosen spot feel secure. That is a credible explanation for the behavior, not a proven account of every dog’s motives.

Familiarity and routine may also matter. If bedtime has always involved settling beside you, your dog may simply prefer that predictable pattern. Individual dogs have different preferences, and the evidence does not establish a complete ranking of reasons or how often each reason applies. Warmth, protection, or a desire to guard the owner should not be treated as universal explanations. A dog may be seeking social contact without having a special protective job in mind.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome dogs show their preference by climbing onto the mattress, while others remain close on the floor, beside the bed, or inside an open crate. Those choices can all be compatible with a comfortable social relationship. The important observation is where the dog relaxes and sleeps well, not whether it chooses the closest possible location.

- Polyurethane Foam: The EHEYCIGA orthopedic dog bed features memory foam and egg crate foam to provide even support and pressure relief. It offers a good balance of softness and support, making it particularly suitable for elderly dogs to alleviate joint pressure.
- SOFA BED DESIGN: This bolster dog bed is designed with 3-sided bolsters to offer additional support for your pet’s neck and head, promoting restful sleep. The surrounding sides encourage your dog to snuggle in and enjoy a comfortable night's rest.
- WATERPROOF COVER: A waterproof film is positioned between the fleece surface and the bottom fabric, ensuring the dog bed remains dry. However, the sides are not waterproof.
- EXTREME COMFORT & MULTIPLE SIZES: The sleeping surface is covered with cozy fleece, creating a soft and inviting sleeping area for your pet. Whatever the size of your dog, we have a dog bed suitable for medium, large, and extra-large breeds.
- CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Remove foam, machine wash cover separately in cold water only, on a delicate cycle.Do not bleach, tumble dry low, and reshape as needed. Do not machine wash or dry the foam core. Allow the bed to expand for 24-48 hours after unpacking.
It is not evidence of dominance
A dog choosing the bed does not, by itself, mean it is trying to dominate its owner or that the owner has caused a behavior problem. Tufts rejects the idea that dogs need to be dominated; Dodman put it plainly: “Dogs do not need to be dominated.” The practical question is whether the arrangement is safe and comfortable and whether the household rule is clear.
If you invite a dog onto the bed, that is a household decision, not a contest for status. If you do not want bed access, a calm, consistent alternative is more useful than interpreting the request as defiance. Dogs can learn that a nearby bed, crate, or other location is their regular place.
Does sleeping near you mean your dog has separation anxiety?
No. A dog’s nighttime choice, even if it follows you to bed, cannot diagnose separation anxiety. The more relevant signs are distress associated with being left alone or with departure cues. A dog can be affectionate and close at bedtime yet settle normally when you leave; another can sleep elsewhere and still panic during departures.
If you see persistent distress when the dog is alone, describe the timing and behavior to a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. Useful details include what happens when keys or shoes come out, during the actual departure, and in the first minutes or hours alone. Do not infer a disorder from where the dog sleeps.
What studies say about closeness and separation-related problems
A 2006 study by Valli Parthasarathy and Sharon L. Crowell-Davis compared 32 dogs whose owners reported separation anxiety with 43 dogs without that report. The researchers found no significant group difference in time spent in contact with or near owners during an attachment test, and no significant difference in proximity to exit doors when dogs were left at home. They concluded that separation anxiety was not simply based on “hyperattachment.” The study is limited evidence; it does not prove that attachment can never relate to separation difficulties, but it does caution against using nighttime proximity as a shortcut diagnosis.

A separate 2001 case-control study examined 200 dogs with separation anxiety and 200 controls. It reported associations with a cluster of behaviors that included extreme following, anxiety around departure cues, and excessive greeting. Those findings concern a broader pattern, not one sleeping decision. They do not show that sharing a bed causes anxiety, or that following at bedtime is enough to identify a problem.
A 2025 Journal of Veterinary Behavior study abstract reported that caregiver stress, emotional closeness, attitudes toward aversive training, and co-sleeping were associated with separation-related problems. Taken together, those factors explained 8.7% of the variance reported in the abstract. That figure describes a limited statistical association, not a causal effect of sleeping together, and it does not establish which direction any relationship runs. For example, a household may choose co-sleeping because a dog already has difficulty settling, rather than co-sleeping creating the difficulty.
A 2022 study likewise examined associations between owner attachment and dogs’ spontaneous sleep EEG parameters. An association-focused study cannot show that closeness itself creates an attachment style or a sleep problem. These findings are reasons to look at the whole behavioral picture, not reasons to prohibit every dog from sleeping near a person.
Should you let your dog sleep in your bed?
There is no single best arrangement for all dogs and households. Tufts says most dogs can sleep in their owners’ beds if both prefer it; dogs can also learn to sleep in a crate or dog bed. Consider the dog’s comfort, human sleep, household safety, and whether everyone can follow the same rule. “Do you let your dog sleep in your bed with you at night?” is ultimately a practical household question rather than a test of affection.
| Arrangement | When it may suit the household | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Dog in the human bed | Both dog and owner prefer sharing, and it is safe for everyone who uses the bed. | Hair, dirt, snoring, heat, crowding, allergies, and sleep disruption may make it uncomfortable. |
| Dog bed beside the human bed | The dog can remain close while having a separate sleeping surface. | It is a practical alternative if either person or dog does not enjoy bed-sharing; buying a bed is not a treatment for anxiety. |
| Crate or another separate sleeping area | The household wants a consistent boundary, or a dog needs a protected place to rest. | Dogs can learn to sleep in a crate or elsewhere; make sure the chosen area is appropriate for the dog and situation. |
Bed-sharing can affect sleep in ways that vary by household. Tufts notes that dirt, hair, snoring, heat, and crowding may bother either the person or the dog. The American Kennel Club also identifies possible allergy aggravation, rare disease transmission, and sleep disturbance. Dogs may have multiple sleep-and-wake periods during a night, which can contribute to disturbance, though it does not mean every dog will disrupt every owner.

Watch the dog’s sleep quality as well as your own. A dog that repeatedly changes position, leaves the bed, pants because of heat, or appears crowded may prefer a separate surface. Conversely, a dog that settles deeply on a nearby bed may be perfectly comfortable without mattress access. Wanting a separate sleeping space is a reasonable preference, not a failure to bond with your dog.

- Choose the boundary. Decide whether the dog is invited onto the bed, allowed up only at certain times, or expected to sleep elsewhere. A nearby dog bed is one option if you want the dog close without sharing the mattress. State the rule in a way every person in the home can follow.
- Make the rule consistent. Tufts recommends clear, consistent expectations. Everyone in the household should use the same boundary so the dog is not invited up on some nights and chased off on others without a predictable rule. Inconsistent access can make settling harder because the dog cannot tell which option is expected.
- Provide the chosen sleeping place. If the dog will sleep off the bed, establish an appropriate alternative such as a dog bed or crate. Place it where the dog can rest without being tripped over or disturbed. The point is to give the dog a defined place to settle, not to assume that proximity itself needs to be eliminated.
- Teach access calmly. If bed access is allowed only by invitation, use the same invitation and off-bed routine each night. Avoid turning bedtime into a physical struggle. A dog that is already guarding furniture or reacting when moved needs a safety plan, not forced handling.
- Reassess comfort and safety. If the arrangement is disturbing sleep, aggravating allergies, creating crowding, or otherwise not working, change the setup. A different sleeping arrangement can still preserve a predictable bedtime routine and social contact before lights out.
When bed-sharing is not safe
Infants and co-sleeping spaces
Tufts advises that dogs should not be on a bed when an infant sleeps in or near it, including in a co-sleeper. Accidental suffocation or injury is the concern. Keep the dog out of that sleeping space rather than relying on supervision while everyone is asleep. A dog can remain nearby on its own floor-level bed while the infant has a separate, protected sleep area.
Guarding or reacting when disturbed
A dog that growls or bites when disturbed while resting, or guards the bed from people or other animals, should sleep in a separate protected area. Children should not be allowed to disturb a resting dog, whether or not the dog sleeps on a human bed. Bed access is not worth a setup that puts someone at risk. If guarding or sleep-startle behavior is new, escalating, or difficult to manage, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for an assessment.
Puppies that cannot be supervised
Tufts recommends a safe enclosure when a puppy cannot be supervised. This is a reason to choose a contained sleeping arrangement rather than leave a puppy loose on a bed unattended. A puppy may fall, chew bedding, soil the mattress, or encounter a hazard that an awake person would normally prevent. The enclosure should be an appropriate, secure place for the puppy to rest.
Small or senior dogs and high beds
The American Kennel Club suggests a floor-level dog bed or dog stairs for some small or senior dogs when jumping onto or off a high bed may be unsafe. These are conditional options, not equipment every dog needs. Consider the individual dog’s mobility, confidence, and ability to get down safely. Preventing a fall can matter more than preserving access to the mattress.

What to watch for beyond bedtime
If you are concerned about separation-related distress, pay attention to what happens around departures and periods alone, rather than treating bedtime proximity as a diagnostic sign. The 2001 case-control study’s reported associations included extreme following, departure-cue anxiety, and excessive greeting, but no single behavior in that list establishes a diagnosis. Describe the pattern and circumstances to a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional, who can assess the dog rather than relying on one nighttime habit.
Likewise, an association between co-sleeping and separation-related problems in the 2025 abstract does not establish that bed-sharing causes the problems. Its reported 8.7% variance figure applies collectively to several caregiver and co-sleeping factors, not to co-sleeping alone. It is not a reason to diagnose a dog or to assume changing the sleeping location will resolve distress. If a dog is distressed when alone, changing the sleeping surface may be one small management choice, but professional guidance should address the broader pattern.
How to decide for your household
- Choose bed-sharing if the dog and owner both sleep comfortably, the arrangement is safe, and the household can maintain its boundaries.
- Choose a nearby dog bed if closeness is welcome but sharing the mattress is uncomfortable or disrupts sleep. A dog bed beside the human bed keeps social proximity without requiring shared bedding.
- Choose a separate protected area if there is an infant in or near the bed, the dog guards the bed or reacts when disturbed, or a puppy cannot be supervised.
- Adjust access or the setup if allergies, dirt, hair, heat, crowding, or jumping onto a high bed makes sharing impractical. A floor-level bed or, where appropriate, stairs can reduce jumping risk for some dogs.
- Review the rule together if household members disagree. A clear decision that everyone follows is more workable than alternating invitations and removals.
The choice is about comfort, safety, and a rule the household can apply consistently. A dog sleeping close is often a normal preference for social proximity; it is not proof of anxiety, dominance, or a particular relationship problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my dog follow me to bed every night?
Dogs are social animals, and sleeping near a familiar person can feel comforting and safe. Routine and individual preference may also explain the choice. Following you to bed alone does not diagnose separation anxiety.

Does sleeping in my bed make my dog anxious?
There is no evidence here that bed-sharing by itself causes separation anxiety. Studies report associations among several caregiver and dog factors, but they do not establish that co-sleeping causes distress.
When should my dog sleep somewhere else?
Use a separate protected area when an infant sleeps in or near the bed, a dog guards the bed or reacts aggressively when disturbed, or a puppy cannot be supervised. A separate setup may also be best for allergies, disrupted sleep, or mobility concerns.
What if my dog growls when I move it on the bed?
Do not forcefully handle or allow children to disturb the dog. Arrange a separate protected sleeping area and seek advice from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional, especially if the behavior is new or escalating.

The Bottom Line
Dogs often sleep near their owners because social closeness can feel safe and comforting, but each dog and household is different. Bed-sharing is optional, not a dominance issue or a diagnosis of separation anxiety. Choose the arrangement that protects infants and vulnerable dogs, supports good sleep, and can be applied consistently.
