Domestic cats have vertical slit pupils because their low, ambush-hunting lifestyle benefits from precise light control and distance cues for nearby prey. Lions and tigers generally have round pupils because their eyes sit much higher above the ground, making those near-ground cues less useful.
The difference is not simply that house cats hunt at night and big cats hunt by day. Pupil shape works together with body height, hunting ecology, and the rest of the eye’s optical design.
What a slit pupil does
A pupil is the opening in the eye that lets light reach the retina. The iris changes the size of that opening: it constricts in bright conditions and expands in dim conditions.
A domestic cat’s vertical pupil can change the amount of light entering the eye dramatically. In a 2015 comparative study, the area of a cat’s pupil could change by approximately 135 times between constricted and dilated states. The comparable change in humans was about 15 times, according to the same study.

That wide range is useful for an animal active at dusk, dawn, indoors, and during the night. A cat can restrict incoming light in bright conditions and admit more in dim conditions.
The pupil is not always visibly a thin line. In low light, a cat’s vertical pupil expands into a much wider opening. “Slit pupil” describes the shape it takes when constricted, not what it looks like under every lighting condition.
Slit pupils also help with close-range distance judgment
Light control is only part of the explanation. A vertical pupil creates a particular kind of optical blur called astigmatic depth of field.
In simple terms, the eye handles vertical and horizontal features differently when something is not at the exact distance being focused on:
- Vertical edges can remain relatively clear across a broader range of distances.
- Horizontal features at the wrong distance become more noticeably blurred.
- The pattern of blur provides information about how far away nearby objects and ground contours are.
That arrangement suits a cat stalking close to the floor. A domestic cat’s prey may be nearby, and the cat may need to judge a final pounce while keeping its head low and its body hidden.
The slit pupil works alongside binocular vision, movement detection, and the rest of the cat’s visual system. It is not a standalone “range finder,” but supplies a useful distance cue as part of the whole optical design.

Why being small makes a difference
The key distinction between a house cat and a lion is not simply that one hunts at night and the other hunts during the day. Many large cats are active at night or around twilight. A more important difference is eye height.
A short cat looking across the ground sees a strong change in distance from one part of its visual field to another. Because its eyes are close to the surface, the ground rises away from the cat at a noticeable visual angle. Blur differences across that scene can therefore help with near-ground distance estimation.

A 2015 comparison of 65 frontal-eyed ambush predators found a strong pattern:
| Finding | Result |
|---|---|
| Species examined | 65 frontal-eyed ambush predators |
| Species with vertical pupils | 44 |
| Species with circular pupils | 19 |
| Vertical-pupil species below 42 cm at the shoulder | 82% |
| Circular-pupil species below 42 cm at the shoulder | 17% |
These figures, reported in the 2015 comparative study, show a correlation rather than an absolute rule. Height, hunting style, activity pattern, and eye structure all matter, and pupil shape alone cannot tell us exactly how an animal hunts.
Big cats generally have round pupils
The familiar large cats in the genus Panthera—including lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and snow leopards—generally have round pupils. Their greater body size and eye height make the near-ground optical benefits of a vertical pupil less important.

Round pupils can still regulate light effectively. The difference is that they do not produce the same strongly directional aperture as a narrow vertical slit. For a taller predator, a circular pupil appears to fit its visual geometry and broader optical design.
This does not mean big cats have inferior night vision. Tigers and leopards, for example, can hunt in low light. Their eyes also contain adaptations for dim conditions, including a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum, which contributes to the familiar eyeshine seen when light enters a cat’s eyes at night.
The lens matters too
Pupil shape is one part of the eye, not the entire explanation. The lens also differs among felids.
Domestic cats have a multifocal optical system. Different zones of the lens focus different wavelengths of light at different distances. A slit-shaped pupil allows the cat to keep using these optical zones even as the pupil becomes very small in bright light.
In a comparative optical study, the Siberian tiger had a monofocal optical system along with a circular pupil. The Eurasian lynx was intermediate: its pupil was described as oval to rhomboid, and its eye design also fell between the domestic cat and the tiger in relevant respects.
This combination supports a broader evolutionary explanation: the pupil evolved together with the lens and the animal’s lifestyle. It is not a simple case of one pupil shape being universally better than another.

“Big cats don’t have slit pupils” is too absolute
The usual comparison is useful, but the wording needs qualification. Not every small wild cat has a perfectly narrow slit, and not every large or wild feline has a perfectly round pupil.
Eurasian lynx pupils are often described as oval or rhomboid. A 2024 analysis covering 52 felid taxa found that most felids had vertical or subcircular pupils, while round pupils appeared in a smaller group that included lions, tigers, and Pallas’s cats.
A more accurate summary is that small felids commonly have vertical pupils, while the largest familiar felids generally have round pupils, with intermediate and exceptional forms in between.

Are slit pupils only for night vision?
No. A slit pupil helps a cat manage a very large range of light levels, but the research-based explanation also involves judging distance near the ground. Saying it is “for seeing at night” leaves out an important function.
Do big cats have round pupils because they hunt in daylight?
Not necessarily. Large cats may hunt during the day, at night, or at twilight. Their round pupils are better explained by the relationship between pupil shape, eye height, hunting ecology, and the rest of the eye’s optics.
Does every ambush predator have slit pupils?
No. The association is strong but not universal. The comparative sample included ambush predators with circular pupils, showing that pupil shape is not a rule that applies without exceptions.

Can you identify an animal’s hunting strategy from its pupils?
Only cautiously. Pupil shape offers clues about ecological pressures, but it cannot prove whether an animal is an ambush hunter, how active it is, or exactly how its eye works.
FAQ
Why do domestic cats have vertical slit pupils?
A domestic cat’s vertical pupil helps regulate light across a wide range of conditions and contributes to distance judgment for nearby, ground-level objects. This suits a short ambush predator that hunts in changing light.
Why do lions and tigers usually have round pupils?
Their eyes sit much higher above the ground than a house cat’s eyes. That reduces the usefulness of the blur-based near-ground distance cue associated with vertical pupils, so round pupils generally fit their visual geometry better.
Are cat pupils always slit-shaped?
No. In bright light, a cat’s pupil may become a narrow vertical slit. In darkness, it expands into a much wider opening so more light can reach the retina.
Do all wild cats have either slit or round pupils?
No. Some felids have intermediate shapes. Eurasian lynx pupils, for example, can be oval or rhomboid, and pupil shape varies across species.
