A peer-reviewed commentary identified heatstroke as the primary cause, worsened by limited hydration and reduced food diversity in disturbed habitats. The phrase “falling dead from trees” describes how some deaths were observed; the evidence points to heat stress amid several compounding conditions.
Why were monkeys falling out of trees in Mexico?
The affected animals were Mexican mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata mexicana). In a commentary first published September 23, 2024, in the American Journal of Primatology, researchers describe deaths during May and June 2024 in southern Mexico. They identify heatstroke as the primary cause, with extreme heatwaves and drought creating dangerous conditions.
The authors summarize their conclusion this way: “Key evidence points to heatstroke as the primary cause of death, exacerbated by limited hydration and reduced dietary diversity in disturbed habitats.” Read the commentary in the American Journal of Primatology.
How did heat and habitat conditions combine?
Heatstroke was the primary cause identified, but the event unfolded alongside conditions that could make it harder for monkeys to stay hydrated and find adequate food. Drought reduced water availability, while wildfires and habitat impoverishment added pressure. In disturbed habitats, a narrower range of foods may also leave animals less able to cope with heat and other stressors.

In May 2024, Mexico’s animal-health authority, Senasica, said official tests had dismissed emerging and toxicological diseases as causes in the animals it investigated. Senasica supported heatstroke associated with high temperatures and insufficient water in local streams as the explanation at that point. That finding concerns the diseases covered by those tests; it does not establish that every conceivable alternative factor was ruled out. Senasica’s statement on its investigation.
How many howler monkeys died, and where?
The 2024 commentary reported more than 300 howler monkey deaths in southern Mexico and said mortality reached 31% in some areas. The 31% figure describes local mortality reported by the authors, not a rate for all affected monkeys or the whole region. It is a figure from the 2024 account, not a current death toll.

What should people do if they find a wild howler monkey?
Do not try to capture, adopt, or keep it. Associated Press reporting on the 2024 event said authorities warned residents against handling or housing the wild monkeys: they are vulnerable to diseases carried by domestic animals. Contact local wildlife or environmental authorities instead, and follow their guidance. Associated Press report on the die-off and public warnings.

They also call for further work on climate impacts and health monitoring. These measures address both emergency response and the need to understand how heat and habitat conditions affect primate populations over time.
