A cat may drool a little while relaxed, but new, heavy, sudden, or continuous drooling is a reason to contact a veterinarian. Drooling can accompany mouth pain, nausea, poisoning, seizures, heatstroke, or other illness, and the saliva alone cannot identify the cause. If your cat is distressed, unwell, or may have contacted a toxin, seek veterinary advice promptly.
When is cat drooling normal, and when should you worry?
Some cats drool lightly when content and relaxed. The important clue is a change from your cat’s usual pattern: drooling that is new, excessive, starts suddenly, or does not stop warrants veterinary attention. Drooling alongside other symptoms is more concerning than a small amount seen only during relaxation.

What can cause a cat to drool?
Dental or mouth pain
Problems affecting the teeth, gums, or other parts of the mouth can make a cat drool. Mouth inflammation may also be associated with bad breath and, sometimes, blood-tinged saliva. These clues can help describe the problem to a veterinarian, but they do not establish the cause.

Nausea or other illness
Nausea and a range of other illnesses can trigger drooling. Because the same sign can have different explanations, a cat that is also vomiting, lethargic, distressed, or in pain needs veterinary assessment rather than home diagnosis.
Poisoning
Drooling is among the signs of feline poisoning. Cornell’s common cat hazards guidance lists risks including insecticides, rodenticides, household cleaners, antifreeze, lead, and some human medicines. It identifies lilies as especially toxic: even a small ingestion can cause life-threatening kidney failure.

If poisoning is possible, contact a veterinarian or an emergency veterinary service immediately. If you know what your cat may have encountered, keep the packaging, label, or a sample available for the veterinary team. Do not delay getting advice while trying to identify the substance yourself.
Seizures, heatstroke, and other emergencies
Seizures and heatstroke are also possible explanations for drooling. If your cat appears acutely unwell or an emergency may be unfolding, contact a veterinarian at once. Drooling alone cannot distinguish these conditions from mouth pain, nausea, or poisoning.

What information should you give the veterinarian?
When you call, describe when the drooling began, whether it is continuous or intermittent, how much you have noticed, and whether this is unusual for your cat. Mention any other signs, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, distress, pain, bad breath, or blood-tinged saliva. If a toxin may be involved, share the product name or bring its packaging when safe to do so.
The veterinarian may ask about your cat’s history and the drooling pattern, examine your cat and its mouth, and recommend further investigation such as blood tests. Treatment depends on the cause: dental disease needs appropriate dental care, while drooling linked to nausea may require investigation of the underlying problem. PetMD’s veterinary reference on cat drooling also describes veterinary examination as part of determining the cause.

Use a veterinary emergency service or animal poison-control contact appropriate to your location. Contact details and fees can change, so verify them when you need help rather than relying on an old number.
