Why Is My Cat Suddenly Drinking More Water? 6 Possible Reasons

A cat drinking more may be responding to drier food, medication, or an illness such as kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. Track the change and consult your veterinarian if it is sudden, substantial, or persistent.

A cat that suddenly drinks much more may simply be eating drier food, but a persistent or marked increase can also signal illness. Kidney disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism are important possibilities. Keep water available, note changes in drinking and urination, and contact your veterinarian about a sudden, substantial, or ongoing change. Thirst alone cannot tell you the cause.

Why is my cat suddenly drinking more water?

Drinking more often goes together with urinating more. A cat may drink to replace water lost in larger volumes of urine, or a health problem may cause it to produce more dilute urine and then drink more. The pattern matters, but it does not identify a diagnosis by itself. See VCA’s overview of increased thirst and urination.

These six categories are possibilities, not a ranked or exhaustive veterinary checklist. Age, diet, appetite, weight, urination, and medications help a veterinarian decide what to investigate.

Six possible reasons for increased thirst

1. Chronic kidney disease

When the kidneys are less able to concentrate urine, a cat may pass more urine and drink more to compensate. Chronic kidney disease is especially relevant in older cats, but age or thirst alone cannot establish that it is the cause. Cornell reports that CKD may affect up to 40% of cats over age 10 and 80% of cats over age 15; the page does not state when those estimates were published. Read Cornell’s chronic kidney disease guide.

2. Diabetes mellitus

When glucose spills into the urine, it draws water with it, increasing urine volume and water loss. Increased thirst and urination alongside weight loss despite a good appetite are notable signs. Cornell estimates that between 1 in 100 and 1 in 500 cats will be diagnosed with diabetes during their lifetime; its page does not state when this estimate was published. Learn more in Cornell’s feline diabetes guide.

3. Hyperthyroidism

This common disease in middle-aged and older cats can cause increased thirst and urination, weight loss, and increased appetite. Vomiting, diarrhea, or behavior changes may also occur. These signs are clues for a veterinary assessment, not a home diagnosis. See Cornell’s guide to hyperthyroidism in cats, last updated April 30, 2026.

4. A change in food moisture

Cats eating wet food may drink less from the bowl because their food supplies water. A recent switch from wet food to dry food can therefore increase bowl drinking. Cornell says wet food can contain up to 80% water; the page does not state when this figure was published. A diet change may explain a difference, but should not be used to dismiss a marked or sustained increase. See Cornell’s hydration guidance.

5. Medication effects

Some medications, including corticosteroids, diuretics, and certain anticonvulsants, can affect thirst and urination. Tell the veterinarian about every medication and supplement your cat receives. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without veterinary direction.

6. Other illness or water-balance disorders

A broader range of problems can also affect thirst and urination. VCA lists liver disease, kidney infection, endocrine disorders, high blood calcium, some cancers, electrolyte imbalance, and, rarely, behavioral primary thirst among possible causes. These possibilities vary and cannot be distinguished by thirst alone. VCA’s testing overview describes the range of conditions a veterinarian may consider.

What signs should I track?

Context helps the veterinarian assess the change and choose appropriate tests. Note:

How much water is too much for a cat?

There is no universal cutoff in the veterinary guidance cited here that diagnoses a problem across cats. Bowl intake varies with food moisture and other circumstances, so a single number cannot explain why an individual cat is drinking more. Measuring a 24-hour amount can help the veterinarian understand the change, but do not use a threshold to rule illness in or out.

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Contact your veterinarian about a sudden, substantial, or persistent increase, especially if it comes with increased urination, weight loss, an appetite change, vomiting, or lethargy. VCA advises that a sudden change in a cat’s behavior or habits should alert an owner to the need for veterinary attention. See VCA’s guide to recognizing signs of illness in cats.

Keep clean water available. Do not restrict drinking: increased thirst may be compensating for water lost in urine, and restriction could worsen dehydration. Do not try a diet or medication change as a substitute for veterinary assessment.

What will the veterinarian check?

The assessment starts with a history and physical examination. VCA’s veterinary authors put it plainly: “The search for answers begins with a complete history and physical examination.” Your timeline, diet, water sources, medications, appetite, weight, and urination pattern can help direct the next steps.

Blood and urine testing

Depending on the findings, blood chemistry and urinalysis may help assess kidney function, urine concentration, glucose, signs of infection, and overall health. For suspected kidney disease, urinalysis includes urine concentration and other features; blood pressure measurement is also important in the medical evaluation. Cornell explains these assessments in its chronic kidney disease guide.

Testing for diabetes and thyroid disease

A single high clinic blood-glucose result does not necessarily establish diabetes in a cat, because stress can temporarily raise glucose. Cornell says persistent elevation of blood and urine glucose together with compatible signs supports diagnosis; fructosamine testing may help when the results are uncertain. For suspected hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone testing may be relevant. See Cornell’s diabetes guide and hyperthyroidism guide.
