What decides whether this is a watch-and-wait event or a reason to call a veterinarian is how often it happens and what else the cat is showing. A single brief episode in an otherwise normal cat is different from repeated vomiting, and both are different from vomiting with lethargy, pain, or possible ingestion of something harmful.
What clear vomit can and cannot tell you
PetMD describes clear vomit as possibly fluid from the stomach or water the cat drank. That describes the material, not the cause. Clear fluid does not prove that the cat drank too much, that its stomach was empty, or that it has a particular disease. Those explanations may come up during a veterinary visit, but they cannot be confirmed from color alone.
The Cornell Feline Health Center and the Merck Veterinary Manual both treat vomiting as a symptom that many conditions can produce. VCA Animal Hospitals makes the same point directly in its article “Vomiting in Cats,” last updated August 14, 2026: “Vomiting is a clinical sign that can occur with many diseases and problems; it is not a specific disease or diagnosis itself.”
Confirm that the cat is actually vomiting
Owners often describe regurgitation, coughing, or gagging as vomiting, and the distinction matters for the veterinarian. Compare what you saw with the following:

- Vomiting usually begins with nausea or repeated swallowing, followed by forceful abdominal contractions that expel fluid, froth, or food.
- Regurgitation is more passive. Material often comes up with little warning, sometimes soon after eating or drinking, without the heaving effort of vomiting.
- Coughing can also bring up froth. VCA describes the typical coughing posture as crouching on all four legs with the neck extended.
If the event is unclear, record a short video on your phone. A clip showing the cat’s posture and effort is often more useful to a veterinarian than a verbal description.
Possible causes of feline vomiting
The veterinary references list many causes of vomiting in cats. None of them can be identified from clear fluid alone:

Which of these applies depends on the cat’s history, examination, and sometimes diagnostic tests, not on what the vomit looks like.

Seek immediate care
Go to a veterinarian or emergency clinic without waiting if the vomiting comes with any of the following, or if you suspect the cat swallowed a foreign object or a toxic substance:

Thresholds from published guidance
The three main veterinary references give different thresholds. Treat them as reasons to call, not as one universal cutoff.

No published prevalence figure specifically for clear-fluid vomiting in cats is available from these references, so these thresholds are clinical guidance rather than statistics about how common the problem is.

If the cat seems well after one brief episode
Monitor the cat closely for the next day and note the following:
- Whether vomiting happens again, and how often
- Whether water and food stay down
- Changes in energy, hiding, or willingness to move
- Changes in drinking, urination, or stool
Ongoing vomiting can lead to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, so a repeat episode is the point to call.

What a veterinarian may do
The veterinarian will start with the episode history and a physical examination. Depending on the signs, the workup may include blood and urine tests, fecal testing, x-rays, or ultrasound. When a serious disease or obstruction is suspected, further procedures such as endoscopy, biopsy, or surgery may be needed.
Treatment depends on the cause. Fluid support may be needed when vomiting has caused dehydration or electrolyte problems. Medication to control vomiting should be prescribed by a veterinarian, and diet changes should also be veterinary-directed.
Do not give human medication or home remedies based on the vomit’s appearance. Also, do not withhold food or water on your own. The references do not agree on water: VCA says water should be freely available during its described treatment plan, while Merck discusses withholding food and says water should be withheld only under veterinary fluid-treatment circumstances. Ask your veterinarian for instructions for your cat.
Hairballs and grooming
Hairballs are one possible cause, and Merck notes that frequent brushing removes loose fur and can limit hairball formation. A grooming brush is a reasonable part of routine care for a cat that produces hairballs. It is not a treatment for unexplained clear-liquid vomiting, and it does not replace a veterinary assessment when vomiting recurs or warning signs appear.
