The real animal most often linked to those stories is the giant squid. Scientists identified it from remains and specimens long before anyone filmed one alive in its natural habitat: the squid lives in deep, dark water that is difficult and expensive to search.
What people mean by the “real-life Kraken”
Kraken stories belong to folklore; giant squid are real animals. Some historical accounts may have been inspired by giant squid, but it is not possible to match every sea-monster tale to a particular species. Carcasses and incomplete remains could also be misread as strange or human-like creatures, as the Smithsonian Ocean’s history of the giant squid explains.

The giant squid’s scientific name is Architeuthis. Recognizing this animal was not a single dramatic discovery that proved the legends true. It was a gradual shift from puzzling reports and remains to specimens that could be examined.

Early reports offered clues, not a clear identification
Smithsonian Ocean traces records of “curious fish” in Denmark to the 1500s. Those reports were interpreted as Sea Monks rather than as cephalopods. Such accounts show how unfamiliar remains and sightings could feed fantastic explanations; they do not establish that every reported monster was a giant squid.

Specimens changed the evidence
In the mid-19th century, Danish zoologist Japetus Steenstrup argued that the legendary beings could be very large squid. A further turning point came in late 1873, when Moses Harvey obtained a complete dead giant squid and displayed it publicly. A specimen made it possible to study the animal as a body, rather than trying to identify it from a tale or fragment. Smithsonian Ocean recounts these steps in its overview of giant-squid size and history.
Why a known species was still hard to find alive
Knowing what the squid was did not mean researchers knew where or how to observe it in its natural environment. Giant squid are associated with deep water: Smithsonian Ocean gives an approximate habitat depth of 500–1,000 metres (about 1,650–3,300 feet). That is not a claim that every individual stays at a fixed depth, but it helps explain the difficulty of searching for them.

At those depths, darkness, remoteness, and the vast area of ocean to search all complicate observation. Research equipment and expeditions are costly, and even a carefully planned search can fail. Smithsonian zoologist Clyde Roper described two unsuccessful New Zealand expeditions: one did not locate a squid, and another was cut short by a storm. The distinction matters: the first live record was not the first in-habitat film. The footage arrived after the animal had already been identified from physical evidence.

Why dramatic footage may not settle identification
Even a clear sighting does not automatically establish an animal’s species, age, or size. During a 2019 Gulf of Mexico expedition, a team observed a squid estimated at 3–3.7 metres (10–12 feet) long. At first, the team was only “70 percent sure” it was a juvenile giant squid and sought review from NOAA and Smithsonian zoologist Michael Vecchione. NOAA Ocean Exploration described the observation in its account of filming a giant squid in the Gulf; the length is the team’s estimate from footage, not a measurement of a collected specimen.
Specimens offer another kind of evidence. In 2009, NOAA Fisheries reported a Gulf of Mexico giant squid collected during scientific research that measured 19½ feet and weighed more than 103 pounds. Chief scientist Anthony Martinez described seeing the catch as the trawl net rose: “As the trawl net rose out of the water, I could see that we had something big in there…really big,” according to NOAA Fisheries’ report on the specimen.

How big is a giant squid?
Length claims depend on what is being measured and how strong the evidence is. Smithsonian Ocean reports a longest recorded total length of 13 metres (43 feet), including the tentacles. The same page discusses a possible length of 20 metres (66 feet) estimated from beak size, but says no squid of that size has been documented. That larger figure is an extrapolation, not a verified specimen measurement.

Size alone also does not make the animal a monster in behavior: Smithsonian zoologist Clyde Roper told Smithsonian Magazine, “Just because they’re big animals that doesn’t mean they’re vicious and dangerous.”
