Why Lake Maracaibo Turns Green—and Why Its Recovery Is So Difficult

Recurring algae and cyanobacteria blooms make Lake Maracaibo green, while sewage, nutrient runoff, and leaking oil infrastructure add distinct pressures. Recovery is difficult, but not proven impossible.

Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela turns green for more than one reason: recurring blooms of algae and cyanobacteria thrive in nutrient-rich water, while a separate pollution crisis comes from leaking oil infrastructure. Its condition is severe, but the claim that recovery is impossible is not an established scientific conclusion. NASA describes Maracaibo as an estuarine lake, with brackish water in the north and mostly fresh water in the south—not a uniformly freshwater lake.

Why does Lake Maracaibo turn green?

NASA describes recurring blooms of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria, along with green algae such as Scenedesmus and Chlorella. Locally, blooms are known as “verdín.” Remote-sensing scientist Eduardo Klein-Salas told NASA Earth Observatory in October 2021 that these blooms are “a permanent feature of the lake, dependent on the seasonal cycle of mixing of the already highly eutrophic environment.”

In an already nutrient-loaded lake, seasonal mixing changes where nutrients are available and influences bloom patterns. NASA identifies excessive nutrients from the lake floor, farmland, and sewage systems as contributors to eutrophication. The SIL 2024 conference abstract describes additional basin pressures, including deforestation, urbanization, wastewater, contaminated rivers, agricultural runoff, and aquaculture.

A separate historical event: duckweed

Not every green episode was an algal or cyanobacterial bloom. NASA documented large blooms of Lemna obscura, a duckweed it says is not toxic. The massive 2004 event followed extreme rains that mixed the lake and brought nutrients upward. Duckweed can create practical problems by clogging water intakes and ship engines, but it should not be confused with cyanobacteria.

What is polluting the lake besides nutrients?

Oil leaks from aging infrastructure are a distinct, overlapping problem—not the cause of the cyanobacterial blooms. NASA’s satellite account distinguishes green algae, river sediment, and crude oil as separate sources of observed water color. Remote-sensing scientist Eduardo Klein-Salas described more than 10,000 oil-related installations and thousands of kilometres of underwater pipelines; this is his estimate, not an independently audited inventory. University of South Florida marine scientist Frank Muller-Karger told NASA that oil was spilling from aging submerged pipelines that were not maintained and were often unmapped.

An Associated Press field report from August 2023 also described leaking obsolete oil infrastructure alongside inadequate waste-treatment capacity. The two pollution pathways compound pressure on the lake, but addressing one does not by itself resolve the other.

How large are the sewage and nutrient pressures?

A SIL 2024 conference abstract reports more than 25 untreated sewage discharges totaling 10,000 litres per second. It also reports tributary loads reaching 35 tonnes of phosphorus and 115 tonnes of nitrogen per day. These are figures attributed to that conference abstract, not independently verified current measurements.

Nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment helps explain why blooms recur; sewage and agricultural runoff are among the external sources, while nutrients already stored in the lake can also matter. The figures indicate the scale reported by the abstract, but they do not establish the lake’s present-day nutrient concentration or bloom extent.

What does the pollution mean for wildlife and people?

The AP reported that oil stains fishing nets and boats, clogs motors, and contributes to livelihood difficulties for local fishers, who also reported reduced catches. NASA says oil contamination threatens wildlife, water quality, and human health. These documented risks are serious, but they do not establish a current exposure assessment for a particular community.

Concern about toxins and fish deaths has also been raised by Beltrán Briceño, a University of Zulia professor and microbiology laboratory head, in AP’s reporting. A green appearance alone cannot show whether cyanotoxins are present, or at what concentration. The sources cited here do not provide current toxin measurements or an official 2026 health advisory, so the water’s present safety cannot be determined from its color or from older reports.

Can Lake Maracaibo recover?

Experts have warned that recovery could be exceptionally difficult, but “impossible” is not a proven scientific verdict. In AP’s August 2023 report, Briceño said, “There is no magic formula” to rescue the lake if it continues to be used as a “septic tank.” NASA’s 2021 account describes persistent eutrophication and oil pollution; it does not conclude that recovery cannot happen. The sources establish interacting pressures, not a quantified probability of recovery or a scientific consensus that it is beyond reach.

Any serious recovery effort would need to address more than the visible bloom. The relevant measures are connected:

  • Reduce nutrient inputs: cut nitrogen and phosphorus entering from sewage, farming, and tributaries across the basin.
  • Improve wastewater treatment: address untreated discharges rather than treating blooms as an isolated lake-surface problem.
  • Stop oil leaks: repair or otherwise control failing infrastructure and assess pipelines and installations that may be poorly mapped.
  • Account for nutrients within the lake: understand how stored nutrients and seasonal mixing sustain blooms even as external inputs are reduced.
  • Track results: use repeat monitoring of water quality, toxins, blooms, and ecosystem conditions to determine whether interventions are working.

The sources document these pressures and the need to distinguish them, but do not establish a vetted ranking of particular cleanup or restoration proposals.

What is known—and what remains uncertain?

NASA’s 2021 account reports that the estuarine lake spans about 13,000 square kilometres and connects to the Gulf of Venezuela and Caribbean Sea through a strait. Its northern water is brackish and its southern water mostly fresh. The phrase “world’s largest tropical lake” is not established as a verified ranking by the sources cited here; NASA describes Maracaibo as one of South America’s largest lakes.

NASA’s satellite observations and historical bloom account, AP’s 2023 reporting, and the SIL 2024 abstract document serious, long-running problems. They do not establish bloom extent, cyanotoxin levels, an official current health advisory, or restoration progress in 2026. Those questions require current monitoring data.
