The behavior alone cannot tell you which explanation applies. Whatever the cause, keep your puppy secured in the rear seating area rather than on your lap or loose in the cabin.
Why might a puppy climb onto you in the car?
Car travel combines several experiences that may be new or unsettling for a puppy: movement and vibration, unfamiliar sights and sounds, confinement, and separation from a familiar caretaker. A puppy may seek contact or try to find a position that feels more secure, but the climbing itself does not prove a particular emotion or motive.
Entering the car, being restrained, hearing the engine, and feeling the vehicle move can all contribute to travel anxiety, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association also identifies motion, vibration, sights, sounds, smells, confinement, and separation from a familiar caretaker as possible sources of transport stress. These are possible influences, not a diagnosis of why one puppy climbs.
Notice what happens around the climbing
Look at the puppy’s overall behavior rather than interpreting one action in isolation. A puppy that settles after climbing may be seeking closeness; restlessness, panting, whining, or heavy salivation may point to distress or nausea. Those signs can overlap, so they do not identify the cause on their own.

Why should you stop the climbing before driving?
A puppy on the driver’s lap or moving freely through the cabin can distract the driver and may be injured if the vehicle stops suddenly. The CDC advises keeping pets riding on a seat in the back seat, restrained in a harness attached to the seat buckle, and warns against letting pets roam around the car. Secure your puppy in the rear seating area before the car moves. Do not rely on holding the puppy, even for a short trip. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association recommends that restrained pets ride in the rear area to help avoid airbag injury.

Choose a restraint that fits your puppy and car
A travel crate and a properly fitted car harness are two practical restraint options. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine discusses crash-tested harnesses, seat belts, and travel crates; the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association recommends secure rigid containers or properly fitted crash-tested restraints. Whether a particular product has been crash-tested depends on the exact model, so verify that claim rather than assuming it applies to every crate or harness.

How to help your puppy get comfortable with car rides
Work in small steps and reward calm behavior. The aim is to make the restraint and car familiar before expecting your puppy to cope with a longer journey.
- Introduce the restraint at home. Let your puppy investigate the crate or harness and reward calm interaction.
- Practice in the parked car. Secure your puppy in the chosen restraint while the vehicle is stationary. Keep sessions brief and positive.
- Take a very short drive. Start with a brief ride, then increase trip length gradually only while your puppy remains comfortable.
- Make the experience predictable. Pair calm exposures with rewards. If your puppy becomes distressed, reduce the duration or intensity and return to an easier step rather than forcing a longer session.
Cornell, VCA, and the Merck Veterinary Manual recommend gradual acclimation through short rides. If your puppy’s distress continues or training stalls, ask your veterinarian for guidance.

When to ask a veterinarian
Persistent panting, whining, restlessness, salivation, or vomiting during travel warrants a conversation with your veterinarian. Drooling and vomiting may be related to motion sickness, while anxiety can cause overlapping signs. A veterinarian can assess your puppy and discuss suitable options, including whether medication is appropriate. Don’t try to diagnose the cause or give medication without veterinary advice.
Keep your puppy safe on every trip
Whether your puppy climbs for contact, feels uneasy, or is responding to motion, the immediate response is the same: secure them in a well-fitted restraint in the rear seating area, then build comfort with brief, positive practice. A specific motive cannot be established from climbing alone.
