Cat wellness exams give your veterinarian a regular chance to assess your cat, update preventive care, and compare changes over time. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines recommend at least one exam a year for cats and at least one every six months for senior cats; health conditions or other individual needs may call for more frequent visits. These are professional guidelines, not a guarantee that an exam will detect a particular disease.
How often should you take your cat to the vet?
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines set a baseline of at least annual examinations for cats, with at least six-monthly examinations for seniors. A veterinarian may recommend a different schedule based on your cat’s age, health, lifestyle, and needs. The guideline’s life stages are kitten, young adult, mature adult, senior, and end of life; it defines mature adults as 7–10 years old and seniors as over 10. Those age bands help shape assessment but do not define an individual cat’s health.

The guidelines are a practical framework for individualized care, not a universal standard of care or legal requirement. Local rules, vaccine labeling, medical history, and your veterinarian’s judgment can affect the plan. See the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines.

A wellness visit is broader than checking whether a vaccine is due. The AAHA life-stage checklist says, “All cats need a full thorough physical examination.” Alongside the exam, the veterinarian may review your cat’s medical and surgical history, medications and supplements, food and water intake, diet, behavior, elimination, pain or anxiety, oral health, parasite exposure, vaccination needs, identification, and lifestyle risks. The AAHA life-stage checklists emphasize tailoring care to the individual cat.
#1 Best Overall
- Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
- Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
- Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
- Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
- Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.
The visit may include recording weight, body-condition score, and muscle-condition score so these can be compared over time. The veterinarian may also note changes in demeanor and handling techniques that worked, which can make future visits easier. A physical examination can identify concerns that merit follow-up, but it cannot diagnose every condition on its own.
Why age can change the focus of the exam
As cats get older, the checklist calls for additional attention to areas such as oral health, abdominal palpation, thyroid and kidney palpation, pain, and musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory health. The veterinarian may also assess the eyes and the back of the eye. These are areas to examine, not a promise that a routine visit will uncover every problem.

For a healthy younger cat, routine care may center on a thorough exam, history, prevention, and age-appropriate vaccination discussion. For a mature or senior cat, closer monitoring and age-appropriate diagnostics may be considered. The right interval and focus depend on the cat, rather than age alone.
Does your cat need bloodwork at every checkup?
No single testing panel is recommended for every cat at every visit. AAHA/AAFP’s diagnostic-testing guidance addresses apparently healthy cats and varies recommendations by life stage and individual factors; it does not cover pre-anesthetic testing. Potential tests include a blood count and chemistry, urinalysis, total T4, kidney-related measures such as SDMA, blood pressure, retroviral testing, and fecal examination.

For apparently healthy mature adults, the guideline’s diagnostic table lists testing every 1–2 years. That is a guideline entry, not a universal prescription. Testing may establish a baseline or be repeated at an interval suited to the cat. Ask what a proposed test is intended to detect, how your cat’s age and history affect its relevance, and what care decisions might change based on the result. See AAHA/AAFP diagnostic testing by life stage.
The guideline notes that specific data documenting the benefits of preventive examinations were not available to its task force. It concludes that regular exams and associated medical data can be valuable for spotting disease or concerning trends in clinical or laboratory measures. That supports regular individualized care, but not a claim that exams guarantee early diagnosis or a particular health outcome.

How to prepare for the appointment
- Help your cat get used to the carrier. Bring it out before appointment day and let your cat become familiar with it. The AAHA checklist includes carrier acclimation in client education; you can also ask the clinic about handling preferences or low-stress visit options.
- Write down changes and current care. Note appetite, food and water intake, weight changes, litter-box habits, behavior, mobility, medications, and supplements. Bring relevant medical history if you have it.
- Ask what the visit includes. Find out what the physical exam covers and whether any vaccine is due based on your cat’s risks and local rules. The checklist says rabies recommendations should follow vaccine labeling and local laws.
- Discuss suggested tests. Ask what each test screens for, why it fits your cat, how often it is appropriate, and whether a result could change the care plan.
If your cat is ill or has a new concerning symptom, call the veterinary practice and ask whether to arrange a sick visit rather than waiting for a routine wellness appointment. Wellness guidance is not a substitute for urgent veterinary advice.
Questions to ask your veterinarian
- Given my cat’s age and health, how often should we schedule exams?
- What changes in appetite, drinking, weight, behavior, mobility, or litter-box habits should I report?
- Which preventive measures or vaccines fit my cat’s lifestyle and local requirements?
- If you recommend a test, what is it meant to detect, and how could the result affect care?
- What preventive-care expenses should I plan for?
The AAHA checklist also recommends discussing financial planning and pet insurance. Ask your veterinarian about expected preventive-care costs; review any insurance terms separately rather than assuming a policy covers wellness exams.
