Sea turtles face several interacting human pressures, especially fishing bycatch and the loss or degradation of nesting and feeding habitat. You can help by keeping trash out of waterways, leaving nesting beaches dark and clear, following safe boating and fishing practices, and reporting distressed turtles to trained responders.

There are seven sea turtle species worldwide, while six occur in U.S. waters. Their legal status and conservation trends vary by species, population, and location; no single threat or solution applies equally everywhere.

What does “endangered” mean for sea turtles?

There are seven sea-turtle species worldwide, and six occur in U.S. waters. Their legal status is not identical everywhere: conservation status can differ by species, population, and country. In the United States, NOAA says all six species found in U.S. waters are listed and protected under the Endangered Species Act. WWF describes five of the seven species as threatened with extinction. These statements use different geographic and classification contexts, so U.S. legal listing should not be treated as a worldwide status label for every population.

It is more accurate to say that sea turtles face serious threats, while the exact status and trend vary by species and location. Some populations are increasing, but recovery challenges remain.

Why sea turtles are unusually vulnerable

A sea turtle does not rely on one habitat. Eggs and hatchlings need a suitable nesting beach. Juveniles and adults may use seagrass meadows, coral reefs, lagoons, estuaries, coastal waters, and the open ocean. Many turtles travel between feeding and nesting areas, crossing multiple jurisdictions along the way.

Their life cycles connect these habitats: harm to nesting beaches, feeding grounds, or turtles during migration can affect survival and reproduction. A threat in one place may therefore combine with other hazards encountered elsewhere.

1. Fishing bycatch is a major threat

Bycatch is the accidental capture of animals that a fishery is not trying to catch. It is a major threat to sea turtles. Turtles can be caught in nets or on hooks; because they must surface to breathe, a trapped turtle may drown.

Bycatch reduction measures depend on the fishery. Monitoring, changes to fishing practices, and appropriate gear or area rules can help, but a measure designed for one gear type will not automatically protect turtles from another.

Turtle-excluder devices

Turtle-excluder devices, or TEDs, are grids fitted inside shrimp nets. Shrimp pass through the bars while a turtle is directed toward an escape opening. NOAA explains TEDs and notes that their use is required in some areas. TEDs are a mitigation measure for suitable shrimp trawls, not a solution to bycatch in every fishery.

2. Nesting beaches are being lost or disturbed

Female sea turtles return to land to lay eggs, so a beach can be essential habitat even though adults spend much of their lives in the ocean. Coastal development, pollution, climate impacts, and other disturbances can degrade nesting and foraging habitat. Beach furniture, holes, and nighttime activity can create obstacles or disturbance for turtles and hatchlings.

Artificial light visible from a nesting beach can deter nesting turtles or draw hatchlings away from the sea. Keep nesting beaches dark, flat, and clear at night, and follow local rules.

  • Fill in holes and flatten sand structures.
  • Stay away from nesting turtles, nests, hatchlings, and marked areas.
  • Observe turtles only from a respectful distance and follow local wildlife guidance.

3. Plastic and marine debris cause injury and death

Sea turtles may mistake plastic for food. Discarded fishing line, nets, and other gear can entangle them, cause injuries, or prevent them from swimming and surfacing. Beach debris can also obstruct hatchlings. These hazards occur alongside other pressures, including pollution that degrades habitat.

Reducing waste at home helps, but individual choices work best alongside effective waste systems and efforts to prevent and recover marine debris.

Useful actions

  • Use reusable water bottles and shopping bags, and reduce disposable plastic where practical.
  • Secure trash so it cannot blow into drains, rivers, or the sea.
  • Never release balloons.
  • Do not abandon fishing line, hooks, nets, or other gear; use an appropriate collection program where available.
  • Join organized shoreline or river cleanups while observing local wildlife rules.

4. Climate change affects nests, beaches, and feeding grounds

Sea turtles have temperature-dependent sex determination: the temperature of developing eggs influences hatchling sex ratios. Warmer nesting sand can affect those ratios, but effects vary by species and nesting site; it is not accurate to say climate change simply makes all turtles female.

Sea-level rise and storms can damage nesting habitat, while warmer water can affect foraging grounds. These climate impacts interact with other threats and differ by location.

5. Direct harvest and illegal trade continue

Turtles and their eggs are killed or collected in some areas. Laws and international trade protections do not remove every local threat, so conservation also depends on effective enforcement and measures that work with local communities.

6. Boats can strike surfacing turtles

Sea turtles surface to breathe and can be difficult to see from a moving boat. NOAA’s guidance for helping sea turtles recommends watching for turtles, slowing down, and putting the engine in neutral if one is close.

How conservation programs protect sea turtles

Sea-turtle conservation has to address nesting beaches, feeding habitat, migration routes, and fisheries. NOAA reports that recovery work includes reducing bycatch, promoting safer boating, and restoring important habitat. In 2025, NOAA Fisheries said some sea turtle populations were increasing while emphasizing that continuing work is needed.

Measure Threat addressed
TEDs in suitable shrimp nets Bycatch in shrimp trawls
Fishery monitoring and safer fishing practices Capture or entanglement in fishing gear
Beach protection and lighting guidance Habitat loss and disturbance to nesting turtles and hatchlings
Safer boating practices Vessel strikes
Habitat restoration and pollution prevention Degradation of nesting and foraging areas

These measures address different hazards; one cannot substitute for all the others. Because turtles migrate across jurisdictions, coordination among communities, agencies, fisheries, and countries is important.

What individuals can do

At home

Reduce disposable plastic, use reusable bottles and bags, secure waste, and never release balloons. Support measures that prevent pollution and protect habitat.

At the beach

Turn off, shield, or redirect lights visible from the beach. Remove furniture overnight and fill holes. Leave turtles, nests, and hatchlings alone, and observe wildlife from a respectful distance. If you see a sick, injured, or dead turtle, contact the local sea turtle stranding network or wildlife agency; do not handle it.

On the water

Watch for turtles, slow down, and put the engine in neutral if one is close. If fishing, do not abandon gear. NOAA recommends barbless circle hooks or artificial bait and moving location if turtles show interest in bait or catch. Follow local guidance if a turtle is accidentally hooked or entangled.

As a seafood consumer

Ask how seafood was caught and consult reliable seafood information, such as NOAA FishWatch. Favor fisheries with credible safeguards to reduce turtle bycatch.

Readers who prefer direct conservation support can investigate transparent programs such as Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Adopt-A-Turtle program, the Olive Ridley Project’s symbolic adoption options, and WWF’s symbolic sea-turtle adoption gifts. Review each organization’s current program details before contributing. A symbolic adoption is a conservation gift, not ownership of a wild turtle.
