When a shark is turned onto its back, it may stop swimming and become temporarily limp. Scientists call this reversible reflex tonic immobility. It is not proof that the shark is dead, asleep or literally hypnotized: voluntary movement stops while rhythmic breathing may continue. The reflex is well documented, but why it evolved remains unresolved.
What happens when a shark is upside down?
Dorsoventral inversion—turning the animal belly-up—can trigger tonic immobility. The shark stops making voluntary movements and often lies limp, while its gills may continue a regular breathing rhythm. The onset and duration vary by species and individual, and some sharks show little or no response.
Fish commonly look relaxed during the state because their muscle response differs from the rigid posture seen in many terrestrial animals. Tonic immobility ends when the triggering handling stops and the shark regains normal control, although recovery is not identical in every species.
Is an upside-down shark hypnotized, asleep or dead?
| Description | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Hypnosis | “Hypnosis” is a popular description, not the scientific diagnosis. Tonic immobility is a reflex-like loss of voluntary movement. |
| Sleep | The state is not ordinary sleep. A 1993 cardiovascular experiment in blacktip reef sharks found significantly reduced heart rate and blood pressure under conditions in which the gills were not irrigated, indicating a substantial physiological response. |
| Death | Immobility alone does not mean the shark has died. Continued rhythmic breathing and later recovery are consistent with a temporary, reversible state. |
The cardiovascular findings come from a particular experiment and should not be generalized to every shark species or every handling condition.

How scientists know it is a physiological reflex
Movement stops while breathing can continue
The defining pattern across the scientific literature is cessation of voluntary movement apart from rhythmic breathing. That combination separates tonic immobility from simply being unable to swim because of injury or exhaustion.
More than inversion can trigger it
Upside-down posture is the usual trigger, but pressure, tail handling and other sensory stimulation have produced similar responses in some species. Because sensitivity differs, a result observed in one shark cannot be assumed for all sharks.

Why do sharks have this response?
There is no established evolutionary explanation. A zebra-shark study states that “The function of tonic immobility in sharks is currently unknown.” Researchers have proposed several possibilities, but they rely on different kinds of evidence and do not carry equal support.
Anti-predator behavior
One hypothesis is that becoming still could make a shark less noticeable or interrupt a predator’s attack. Direct observations of a temporarily immobile animal can show what happens, but they do not demonstrate that predators are deterred in nature.

Courtship or mating
Another proposal links the response to courtship or mating interactions. Evidence for this idea is species-specific, so it cannot be treated as a general explanation for all sharks and rays.
A retained response with little present-day benefit
Joel H. Gayford and Jodie L. Rummer’s 2025 comparative review examined 13 chondrichthyan species. It found no significant relationship between the evolution of tonic immobility and major ecological axes. The authors suggest that the response may lack adaptive significance in living sharks and rays, persisting through their lineage because its overall fitness costs are small. They also propose that losing the response could be associated with entanglement risk in shallow, bottom-dwelling habitats.

That is an evolutionary interpretation, not a settled consensus. It also does not rule out a benefit in a particular species, life stage or situation.
What the evidence shows, side by side
| Explanation or finding | Evidence type | Species scope | What can reasonably be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary immobility after inversion | Direct behavioral observation | Species vary; some respond weakly or not at all | Tonic immobility is a real, reversible response, not universal shark behavior. |
| Reduced heart rate and blood pressure | Physiological experiment | Blacktip reef sharks in a 1993 study | The state can have measurable cardiovascular effects under specified ventilation conditions. |
| Use during tagging and sampling | Controlled field handling | Sawfish and zebra sharks | Researchers can use the response, but handling must be adapted to species and breathing needs. |
| Predator escape or courtship | Behavioral hypotheses | Not demonstrated as a universal shark function | Possible explanations remain unconfirmed. |
| No clear ecological correlation | Comparative evolutionary analysis | 13 chondrichthyan species in the 2025 review | The broad evolutionary function remains uncertain. |
Why researchers sometimes turn sharks over
NOAA Fisheries documents turning sawfish upside down while attaching tags. A zebra-shark field study likewise used the natural response during capture, tagging and tissue sampling. Immobilization can make brief, carefully controlled procedures possible, but it is not a license to handle a wild shark casually.

Welfare factors that matter
- Species: induction and recovery differ among sharks and rays.
- Ventilation: a restrained animal may need water moved across its gills; the blacktip reef-shark cardiovascular study specifically compared conditions with and without gill irrigation.
- Duration: longer restraint increases physiological and handling risk.
- Release: the animal must be returned in a condition that allows normal swimming and breathing.
These details are why trained teams use species-specific protocols. An untrained person should not attempt to flip a shark to make it “freeze,” whether in the ocean, an aquarium or a fishing situation.
Why the behavior still feels mysterious
Scientists can describe the trigger, the visible response and some physiological effects more confidently than they can explain its purpose. A response that appears in multiple cartilaginous-fish lineages does not automatically have one shared modern function. Conversely, the absence of a clear ecological pattern does not prove that tonic immobility is useless.
The most defensible conclusion is narrow: tonic immobility is a documented, reversible reflex that can temporarily stop voluntary movement; it can alter cardiovascular function; it varies among species; and its evolutionary role is still unknown.
