Bright blue fat or muscle in a wild pig can be a warning sign that it ate pesticide bait containing dye. It does not, by itself, identify the chemical or prove that the meat is safe to eat. In a 2025 investigation in Monterey County, California, authorities detected the rodenticide diphacinone in the stomach and liver contents of one pig recovered with blue tissues. Hunters who find unusual blue tissue should treat it as a possible exposure warning and ask the relevant wildlife or public-health authority for guidance about that animal and location.
Why can a wild pig’s fat turn blue?
Some pesticide baits contain dye, and fat-soluble dye can accumulate in an animal’s fatty tissue. Texas Department of Agriculture materials describe feral hog bait containing warfarin and blue dye intended to make bait ingestion visible in the hog’s internal fat. A North Texas field evaluation also used fat-soluble blue dye in warfarin bait and reported blue internal fat in carcasses with evidence of bait consumption.

That Texas example explains one way blue fat can occur; it does not establish what caused blue tissue in every wild pig. Color is a clue, not a chemical test. An animal’s appearance alone cannot identify a particular pesticide.

What did California wildlife officials find?
In a July 30, 2025 release, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) said a wildlife trapper reported multiple observations of blue muscle or fat in wild pigs in Monterey County in March. CDFW’s Wildlife Health Lab investigated with the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory at Davis. They detected diphacinone in the stomach and liver contents of one wild pig recovered with blue tissues. CDFW said exposure could have occurred through eating bait or by eating an animal that had ingested bait. CDFW’s release describes the investigation.

The specific laboratory finding was in one pig. The release does not say that every pig reported with blue tissue tested positive, identify the source of exposure for every animal, or estimate how common exposure was across Monterey County. It also notes that blue discoloration may not always appear in wildlife exposed to rodenticides.
How the California and Texas examples differ
| Context | Chemical and evidence | What the blue color means |
|---|---|---|
| Monterey County, California; reports investigated in 2025 | CDFW reported diphacinone in the stomach and liver contents of one pig recovered with blue tissues. | A possible sign of bait exposure; the finding does not identify the cause in every reported pig. CDFW |
| Texas feral hog bait | The Texas Department of Agriculture identifies warfarin as the active toxicant in Kaput feral hog bait and describes the product’s fat-soluble blue dye. Texas Department of Agriculture bait information | The dye is intended to make bait ingestion visible in internal fat; this is a separate example from the California investigation. Texas Department of Agriculture |
Does blue fat mean the pig ate rat poison?
It can indicate exposure to dyed pesticide bait, but color alone cannot prove that a pig ate a particular poison. In the California case, diphacinone was detected in one animal’s stomach and liver contents; in the Texas example, the bait described by the state contains warfarin. Those are distinct chemicals and contexts. Do not assume that a blue pig encountered Texas warfarin bait, or that every exposed animal will look blue.

CDFW also cited a separate 2018 California study in its release: anticoagulant rodenticide residue was found in 10 of 120 wild-pig tissue samples (8.3%) and 10 of 12 bear samples (83%). Those are results from that earlier study’s samples, not estimates of exposure among the Monterey County pigs reported in 2025 or of current prevalence across California.
Is wild pig with blue tissue safe to eat?
CDFW warns that game meat might be contaminated if the animal was exposed to rodenticides. Its Pesticide Investigations Coordinator, Dr. Ryan Bourbour, said: “Hunters should be aware that the meat of game animals, such as wild pig, deer, bear and geese, might be contaminated if that game animal has been exposed to rodenticides.” The warning appears in CDFW’s release.

Neither color nor ordinary-looking tissue establishes whether meat is safe. The cited agency guidance does not provide a home test, cooking temperature, or other procedure that establishes safety for potentially exposed meat. If you find blue tissue, do not rely on appearance or assume that cooking or trimming resolves a possible exposure; contact the wildlife or public-health authority responsible for that location for case-specific advice.
What should hunters do if they find blue tissue?
- Do not treat color as a diagnosis. Blue tissue can be a warning sign, but it cannot identify the chemical or confirm exposure on its own.
- Do not use normal color as reassurance. CDFW says blue discoloration may not always be present in wildlife exposed to rodenticides.
- Seek local, case-specific guidance. Contact the relevant state wildlife or public-health authority and describe where the animal was found and what tissue looked like. The available CDFW release does not set out a universal testing or consumption-decision procedure.
Texas bait rules are not a recommendation to use it
Texas classifies warfarin used specifically as a feral hog toxicant as a state-limited-use pesticide. The Texas Department of Agriculture says purchase and use require the appropriate applicator licensing or direct supervision, with category requirements depending on the applicator pathway. See the state’s bait information and state-limited-use pesticide guidance. This regulatory context explains the Texas bait example; it is not a suggestion that hunters deploy pesticide bait.
