Why spotted lanternflies are harmful
The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper that feeds on plant sap. It can feed in groups on a range of woody and herbaceous plants, including grapes, hops, apples, stone fruits, maples, walnuts, oaks, and pines. Damage varies by plant and situation; it is not accurate to say that every tree or crop it visits will die.
Feeding can also produce honeydew, a sugary residue that accumulates on surfaces and supports sooty mold. Large infestations can therefore affect plant health and make outdoor areas sticky or unpleasant. No. Cornell Cooperative Extension says spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting humans, pets, or wildlife. Their mouthparts are adapted to feed on plant tissue, not to attack animals. The direct bite or sting risk from a lanternfly is not the main pet-safety concern.
Are spotted lanternflies toxic to pets?
Cornell Cooperative Extension reports that no toxins have been confirmed in spotted lanternflies to date. A hypothesis that they might retain compounds from tree-of-heaven has not reached scientific consensus, so it should not be treated as a proven poisoning mechanism. Poison Control likewise notes possible stomach upset after ingestion but does not establish a predictable toxic dose.

Honeydew and sooty mold: effects around pets
Honeydew can accumulate beneath infested plants and coat surfaces such as decks, outdoor furniture, and walkways. Sooty mold can grow on the residue. These conditions may make pet-accessible outdoor areas sticky or unpleasant. Honeydew may also attract other insects; any sting risk comes from insects such as bees or wasps, not from the lanternfly.

Avoid assuming that a tree with lanternflies is certain to die or that every host is affected equally.

Control methods and pet safety
Control recommendations depend on location, life stage, and the property. Traps are for managing lanternflies in the environment; they are not treatments for a pet that has eaten an insect. No method should be described as eliminating every lanternfly.
